    Top 3?

    Who would you rate above him?

    I personally think Armstrong, Greb, Robinson and Langford should always be above him.

    I think Charles should be above him.

    I think 6-9 is about right.

    I have him at #6.

    We saw it again with Sweat Pea but nothing beats the original. One of boxings pre modern era fighters that will do well today

    I need to see Greb in a fight, not impressed with his technique hes shown in YT. Langford, Greatest Canadian Boxer ever but Id put Pep and Charles above him, both a bit more refined and sophisticated

    Im just trying to be objective, I have no bias. I like the old fighters and the current ones just the same. I just think that current fighters have obviously benefited from older fighters and the sport has evolved, no doubt about it.

    I'm about as interested in the footage of Greb training on YouTube as I am in the footage of Ali beating up that stuffed gorrilla. If Tunney's technique impresses you a bit more, keep in mind that Greb, despite being much smaller, beat Tunney and ran him close twice.

    You can't get more sophisticated than a puncher with trapping techniques and pressure as advanced as Langford's appeared to be, and in resume terms Langford buries Pep and Charles combined.

    I really have not given it much thought after top 10 but I got Robinson @ 147 Pep @ 126 Armstrong @ 130 Duran @ 135 and Greb @ 160 then Langford @ 168 and Charles @ 175 Moore@ 175 Marciano fits in somewhere @ 188 Joe Louis @ 210 ....I think these guys would all be platinum @ there weight but there are many others in between @ the same weights like

    Langford was one of the greatest and tragic figures in boxing. He was a physical specimen at the time. Great versitile fighter who can fight outside with his extrordinary reach and even better inside (trapping)

    But he was a product of his times, upright stance and hands down too often. He didnt have the footwork/angles of a Pep. Defensive criterias better to transcend eras.

    As for Greb, heck even Johnson and Dempsey said it was hell to spar with him, probably too quick for both but still needs to see footage.

    Ahh Pancho Villa, we'll nver know, died at 24 but from some of the clips, he was a beast. Too bad he died a long long time ago, otherwise fans would have bestowed the same amount of post mortem accolades equal to a Salvador Sanchez had he died recently.

    If you have Langford's power/chin combination leading with your hands lower is probably the correct thing to do even from a technical standpoint.

    Great A, I'm a fan of the work you did on the history of Heavyweight Champions. Thanks for all the work you did there and on the Pep tribute, they're a joy to watch.

    Don't see what is available of Pep on film being better than what we can see of Jim Driscoll and Packey McFarland. They had the defense about as good as Pep's, but were much better offensively, more versatile.

    Pep gets too much credit for being stylistically unique and 'inventing' defense. He definitely had prototypes in guys like Jim Driscoll, Benny Leonard, Young Griffo, Tommy Loughran etc.

    I don't see it in Pep's footage either (including the 1945 fight), nothing I haven't seen from Benny Leonard, for example.

    Young Griffo wasn't anything similar to Willie Pep, didn't use much footwork, Locche reminded Griffo a lot more.
