Its certainly arguable.I would probably go for ; Robinson Greb Armstrong In no order. ps. Should Pep be above Benny Leonard ? Not for me.
Chalky Wright x3-4 Sandy Saddler Phil Terranova Manuel Ortiz Jackie Wilson were some of his best wins
I have him right under SRR but he has a case for #1, most people only know the Saddler fights but they dont realize that was after the plane crash. Still in one battle he totally outclassed Saddler but they were prone to the rough and dirty stuff Pep was amazing Greb Benny Leonard Armstrong Duran
I think as a Heavyweight at 188lbs Marciano and Langford could fit in somewhere as well as Fitz but the rest are the lower weight class. Ezzard also fits in high top 10 and IMO his best work was between 168- 190lbs
Good List Mcgrain. Can't agree with you on Fitzsimmons placement. In my opinion, he fought in an era where boxing technique was still underdeveloped, and transitioning from the bareknuckle era. The way those guys fought in Fitz day, they would get eaten alive by fighters 1940 and on. Also I don't like the way he kept his hands low by his waist, with no upperbody movement, and his defense consisted of blocking and leaning back to avoid being hit.
Head to head you may be right, though I think Fitz's style may be so weird it might translate a little better than you think - but in terms of p4p peer to peer and punch to punch he's there or thereabouts I think. Which is to say he was absolutely the greatest fighter, pound-for-pound of his own era.
Which list of 5 best wins sounds better, the above or this one (random pick of an ATG)? Johnny Dundee Sid Terris Jackie Fields Jimmy McLarnin Tony Canzoneri *missing the cut are at least three IBHoF-ers
