Willie Ritchie vs Mexican Joe Rivers

This fight was scheduled for 20 rounds and the fighters both averaged 95 punches per round for the 11 rounds that it lasted.

I suspect that the lightweights of this general era were the best pure athletes that the boxing ring ever produced.

 

Two very good technicians, especially by their era's standards.

I've always suspected Ritchie was a very underrated fighter, though without having actually seen him. This is the second fight in which he made a renowned tough fighter say "No mas" (the other being Wolgast). After this fight, he also won a reported war against another tough contender, "Harlem" Tommy Murphy, and very likely appears to have been robbed of his title against Freddie Welsh, who he also beat in a subsequent fight.

 

Damnit, why isn't this thread getting more attention?? Isn't anyone else thrilled at the prospect of seeing Ritchie?? This is a great action fight too, probably as good as any that has ever been held at lightweight.

Ritchie really impresses me in this fight. He's a great technician, good counterpuncher and combination puncher, and he has one helluva stiff jab. I always suspected that he was worthy of a place among the all time top 20 at LW, and his form in this fight certifies it for me.

I have seen the Ritchie Rivers fight, I made a trand on this and got like what?? 3 or 4 posts??

It was a good fight, Ritchie look amazing and the ko was one of the best I seen.

I dont see how its a no mas when Rivers got the ten count.

Ritchie is a great imo. Underated, but he would give most atg lightweights trouble. Even Duran.

I think it looks better on the big screen than it does on a tiny degraded Youtube video imo.
