My take is Dempsey likely would have been too much for the Wills of 1924 or later.

The Wills of 1920 or 1921 might well be a different matter, and was certainly a more dangerous contender than Brennan or Carpentier.

However, I judge this article basically worthless for two reasons

1--There was such deep racism in the US and the US press in the 1920's that I doubt if very many would have given Wills a fair shake in such an evaluation.

2--Tex Rickard paid off journalists, and I don't think he (or the bigshot pols above him) wanted a Dempsey-Wills fight. The hack journalists wrote what Tex paid them to write.

    Hyperbole.

I think jack definitely beats him though. Murder just sounds more dramatic.

It was the "definitely" part that shocked me!

L, when lauding Ali, any praising adjective will do for his flock, but when you use a boxing phrase "murder" to give your favorable opinion of a DEMPSEY win, your taken to task...Oh, Freud would have a field day on ESB...
Why the double standard ? I have my opinions...

Nobody "took him to task." He can say murder all he likes.

I think Dempsey beats him but it does not appear to be an easy fight, Wills had pride and courage I just think Dempsey was too fast and explosive and would either beat him on a rugged decision or Ko, Wills was a strong man had a good reach but was also pretty easy to hit. Dempsey before Tunney had decent foot speed, while Harry was not that fast of foot.

If I had to bet it would be Jack but Harry was a challenge IMO

It is all part of the publicity side of the game. I'd be surprised if Wills and his manager didn't bung a few dollars to writers here and there too.
Rickard, I believe, seems to have systematically paid off a good chunk of the NY boxing press. He was promoting Harry Wills fights by 1924 anyway.

I believe Rickard was instrumental in barring Wills from getting his long-awaited shot from 1923 - '26. He also provided Wills with some decent paydays. It made sense to keep Wills as a big-name heavyweight but Rickard had a phobia of black heavyweight champions.
