Wing Chun Fighter Shawn Obasi Talks Possible Deal With Strikeforce

That M1 Global vid really pisses me off. They rejected the guy because he didn't fight like a muay thai fighter. He said he's wing chun so put the guy in the ring and let him fight. Don't preclude him from fighting by judging him on how he kicks a set of pads. Why didn't they have a wooden man set up for him to work on? The tryouts were clearly biased towards muay thai stylists and MMA mimics. (and I say mimics meaning alot of MMA fighters try to kick like muay thai fighters - but they don't have the conditioning and nuances of a true muay thai fighter - hence they are merely mimicking a style rather than expressing it.)

 

thats messed up that they didnt let him fight just cus he doesnt have a popular martial art style that transitions to MMA.

I thought you are allowed to bring any style you want to the cage? How is he supposed to have muy thai skills, when he is Wing Chun?? that's like telling Lesner can't fght cos his boxing technique is crappy, yet he's a wrestler! so you play to your strengths!

That's some seriously ****ed up ****! I don't particularly think Wing Chun is effective in MMA, but the dude has a right to bring it and prove himself and his style. If he gets exposed and smashed up so be it, but let the man fight!

 

I would actually be quite interested to see if someone could pull off a Wing Chun style successfully in MMA and I think that guy should have been given a chance to prove himself.

IMO that is the essence of the sport still, style vs style. Obviously you need to add to your game by training BJJ, wrestling and striking but these guys that come though who are jack of all trades, master of none are boring as ****; like they have no soul. I prefer to see a guy who excels at one aspect and complements it with other styles, but still sticks to their bread and butter. I want to see Muay Thai/Kickboxers with good technique knocking people out. I want to see sick subs from Jiu Jitsu guys, slams and takedowns from wrestlers, throws from Judokas etc. The guys who aren't especially good at any one aspect do nothing for me. Forrest Griffin is possibly the best example.

Also M-1 is a joke and has proven itself to be so. Up and coming promotion my arse.

Apparently he has a record of 0 wins and 2 losses. I very much doubt he's going to sign with SF or any organisation for that matter.

Wing Chun would be useless in MMA. I used to practice it as a kid. Its a nice base if you like Kung Fu but in MMA as a primary style it would be utterly useless.
