Anyone else think their defence can actually work against them? Although it is good you could ask is it actually effective? Not so much in the taking punishment (although they still take more punishment than if they just made someone miss) but in scoring rounds. Although they don't get hit cleanly very often they still allow people to hit them, which if they're not countering straight away allows people to pile up points. As an example (just an example for this thread, not a what if) if you had Clottey vs Pac/ May you could have a close round where both fighters landed 20 shots, but Pac/ May hit Clottey's gloves some 20 times, but Pac would be in and out so Clottey couldn't counter and May would make him miss clearly. Unless Clottey's 20 shots were real big, the 20 blocked would play a part in the judges scoring. What do you think?
I think it works for them in a few points. 1. Over time, they will not be brain damaged from being beaten up, physically. 2. They will have more energy as the rounds progress. 3. It helps in destroying the opponents courage as the fights closes. 4. An opposing fighter would become more exhausted at punching a wall. It does pile points against them, however they are fighting and countering while blocking. It is not the same as just blocking and taking consecutive blows.
It works in there benefit in my eyes. I mean the only reason Winky lost the last fight is because Paul broke through and punched around his defense. Clottey beat Cotto as far as I"m concerned it was all due to him stopping Cotto's offense.
