Winky is coming back... He Can Be The Middleweight King!!

Apparently Winky is returning on Dec 4, fighting at 165lbs.

However, I feel pretty sure he could still make 160lbs once he's back fighting regularly, as Wink is a natural 154lbs-er who looked a bit out of his depth up at 170lbs.

I really think that Winky could become a Hopkins-like figure at 160lbs over the next 5 years.

After seeing what Hopkins did to Pavlik, can anyone rule out a boxer as skilled as Winky doing more or less the same thing?

Would Pavlik or Abraham have the skills to beat someone as seasoned and experienced as Winky?

Right now, B-Hop, Calzaghe and JM Marquez are 3 of the world's top 4 fighters, and they are all older than 35.

I think in a year or two, Winky will make it 4 out of 5.

He can become the king of the middleweights, if he chases and gets the big fights.

    Thoughts/opinions?

I've said all along, Winky once he gets back in the ring, if he's fit and focused, he would easily beat both Abraham and Pavlik.

I'd like to ask RealIZM for his opinion if he comes in this thread. He attempted to ridicule me for this opinion, and vastly under-rated Winky, saying Spinks, Santos etc would beat him, and Kirkland could put him on the canvas.

Tell me, after seeing Hopkins v Pavlik, has your opinion changed at all?

I'd say Winky just wants another big payday or 2. Can't see him hanging around for another 4-5 years.

Winky's on the down slide, and he'll be especially ineffective at any weight over 154. You really have to question his desire too. He could have had a rematch with Jermain Taylor, but instead he just stalked away and pouted like a schoolboy taking his football home. He got schooled by Hopkins and took another long layoff. Now he's coming back to fight someone named Michi. Hardly the stuff legends are made of. Arthur Abraham would finish him off like James Toney finishes an appetizer.

I sort of disagree that Winky can be some Hopkins like figure because of their styles. Winky is a high work rate guy right now and that's gonna go as he ages. And he's a pretty stationary fighter and probably has worse legs than Hopkins. He's not necessarily a "sweet science" guy in the sense that he's all about hitting you and making you miss. He puts up that high guard and pumps the jab. Completely different style from Hopkins.

As for Pavlik, i think Winky's style is somewhat tailor made for Pavlik. As said before, Winky stands right in front of you with the high guard. He's going to pump the jab in your face but still, this style will give Pavlik every chance to win rounds because he will be in front of Pavlik. Winky seldom uses movement to offset his opponent's offense like Hopkins does and that was probably the biggest factor in beating Pavlik.

Having said that, i still think it's a toss up.

You have got the impression I was directly comparing Wright to Hopkins, but that was not what I was doing.

I said Wright can become a 'Hopkins-like figure' at 160, but by that I meant a dominant champion not a carbon-copy of Hopkins stylistically.

I said Wright could do a similar job on Pavlik, but again I meant the result would be similar (a wide UD), not that Wright would fight the exact same fight as B-Hop did.

I am well aware they are different fighters.

I just think that Wright is a skill-based boxer like Hopkins or Toney or Mayweather or Jones, and I do not think that Pavlik or Abraham are. And when it comes to the crunch, I almost always back the skill-based boxer over the power-based boxer.

It all depends on what Winky has left.

Late 30s and inactivity isn't a recipe for success.

Also depends on where he fights.

Middleweight isn't deep and Pavlik is the only one w/ a legit shot at beating him.

At s. middle he would have his hands full.

Winky has a reputation for boring fights, but that is a matter of taste. Anyone who questions Winky's heart, skill, or resume' is out of line. Go back to 1996 and his victory over a prime Bronco McKart, and then work forward. He won some and he lost some, but his over all resume' is VERY impressive.

I am glad he is back in action, and I hope he is serious. He could shake things up a bit at 160.

I do not think a Wright/Abraham fight is particulary appealing from a fan friendly stand point. Styles make fights, and in this one we'd have a defensive minded fighter against a fighter who throws 35-40 punches in a busy round. However, it would establish one or the other as the second best middleweight in the world. My best guess at this point is that Winky wins a rather boring UD.

Wright/Pavlik is a very different story. A defensive wizard against an offensive machine is a great clash of styles. There is one rather obvious problem, and it is this. Top Rank and Team Pavlik have offered Winky multiple opportunites, and he has turned them all down. They called Winky out 5 or 6 times when KP was on his way up, but Winky wanted no part of Kelly. Before they made the Hopkins fight, Winky was on the short list for this fall. He turned down $2.4 million plus a cut of the PPV revenue.

However, after witnessing Pavlik's lop-sided loss to BHop, Winky's confidence is probably soaring with the eagles. He may now actually be willing to do something beyond running his mouth about fighting KP. Winky is one of only two fighters I've heard Kelly trash talk. Winky's accusations that Pavlik is ducking him apperantly pissed Kelly off. He said; "Winky Wright? Now there's a guy I'd love to smack around the ring. He's a little guy that can't hit very hard. I'd love to smack him around."

Winky Wright in good shape against a highly motivated, pissed off, Kelly Pavlik! ****in' BRING IT! I'll take KP by a clear UD or late TKO.
