Two questions - two answers. First; No they wee not that boring, but it was because those thre opponents did what they could to avoid that. It was not really Winky that worked to make them exciting. Second; Kessler. Kessler has said before that he is interested and I think he would gladl make a fight eithr at catchweight or for his smw belt if belts are necessary.
There are 2 fights at 160 that NEED to happen: Pavlik/Wright; Pavlik/Abraham. The Abraham fight is pretty much agreed on for January 09. Winky on the other hand is a whole different story. I tend to think Arum should have stepped up to the plate, and made it happen. Pavlik/Wright is about legacy, not money. Pavlik is hot right now. After beating JT in the rematch, if Pav were to beat Wright this fall, and Abraham next January, his value as an attraction would sky rocket.
I don't blame Winky for turning it down this would be a PPV fight and do atleast 350K in buys. Winky should get atleast $2.5 mil for this fight.
Winky would have got his $1.2 million plus a slice of ppv revenues. We also have to look at what Winky brings to the table: A record of 1-1-1 in his last 3 outings, and a reputaion for boring fights (whether or not he deserves the rep is open to debate, but he has that rep.) He's 36 years old and went 32 rounds with a guy Pavlik smoked in 6 rounds. And he has a draw with a guy Pav sparked in 7. So, if I play devil's advocate, I can see a lot of reasons for not offering Winky huge money. However, in the end I think Arum should have found a way to MAKE THE ****ING FIGHT!!!
This fight would easily do 350K in buys. Pavlik is an exciting champ and Winky is a big name. BTW how many buys did Hopkins-Winky do? I think it did atleast 350K in buys.
They're lowballing Wright. However if there are acheivement awards for how to make bad decisions in one's career - Winky might be a big winner. He hurt himself by not accepting the offer for the Taylor rematch and has slowly slid out of the boxing eye following his loss to Hopkins. If he had stayed at middleweight and established himself as the top contender, HBO would be begging him to fight Pavlik right now.
Less than $1M can be $500K or $800K. So we can't really say that Arum even offered $1M. I think that Winky has paid his dues regardless of what people may think and was/still is ranked as a P4P guy.
I'd be interested to know just howmuch he stood to gain from PPV buys if the fight pulled in say 350K in buys or something like that. If it was over 1 mil that would have been a pretty fair payday. 2 mil for Winky is a little low in my opinion but its the type of offer one could work with.
I think it would do better than 200K, but even if that's all it did, that adds up to about $10 million. With $10 million ppv revenue Arum couldn't find another $1 million for Winkyatsch
I hear what you're saying but IMO Winky beat taylor 7-5 on my card. He's still a big name and really only been dropped from the top 10P4P for inactivity losing to Hopkins, who at the time was #2 or #3 P4P at 170 didn't hurt him IMO.
