Winky Wright underrated

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Classic Boxer, Jun 27, 2013.

  1. Everyone knows he won that Vargas fight.

Mosley (2x) and Trinidad. He was shot when he fought Hopkins, Williams, and Quillin.

One of the best high guard fighters ever. He was definitely a very underrated 154 lber in his prime.

Yes he was underrated during most of his career.

Don't think he was shot against Hopkins, maybe slightly past his best, especially at the higher weight but Hopkins was 4 years past his prime as well. Winky was definitely shot against Quillan though and against Williams.

Most people rate him very highly. He was underrated pre-Mosley but from that point on, he was universally regarded as a terrific fighter.

I don't think anybody that truly knows boxing would underrate him.. I always thought of all the guys named that could beat Mayweather he had the best chance. His size, guard, and pressure would have been fantastic to watch against Floyd.

That was supposed to be a tune up fight for Mosley vs. Trinidad too

Wonky should be a Hall of Famer, I don't think he's especially underrated. He did hurt his legacy with the Paul Williams/Kid Chocolate fights though

    He is wildly OVERRATED!!!

But if fighters like Gatti can get in the HOF(I think) than why not Winky?

Wow you guys are seriously overrating him. Excellent fighter, yes. Not a HOF'er and definitely not an ATG.

winky was a fine boxer. i was always a very big fan. he was frustrating as hell though with the way he would constantly shoot himself in the foot by pricing himself out of fights. he priced himself out of a fight with pavlik. hell he turned down 5 million dollars for a rematch with jermain taylor. five ****ing million dollars. i never understood that.

Didnt he also reject an offer to fight DLH?

Regardless, Wright was a great boxer, one of the best jabbers in recent years.

    Agreed.

People may argue that he was a late bloomer, but the losses to Vazquez and Simon shouldn't be ignored. He was pretty green for the Vazquez loss, but he still got bounced off the canvas by the same guy that a fading, podgy Whitaker comfortably beat, and who lost virtually every round to Carl Daniels before the one-punch finish.

He beat three elite fighters (Mosley, Trinidad and Quartey), but neither was in their prime or at their best weight.

He probably deserved the nod against Vargas and Taylor, but neither of them are likely to get in the HOF either, and certainly aren't ATGs.
