Winky Wright underrated

yeah it depends on who you believe. winky was for sure calling him out but there were also reports that he was asking for too much money.

 

Wright was only 22 when he lost to Vasquez and if you watch the fight he was a very different fighter back then the tight defensive skills were nowhere to be seen in that fight.

But I agree about the loss to Simon. Wright was in his prime while he did learn and become a more active fighter after this close loss, I think Simon with his size, speed, power and aggression would have always been a tough fight. Personally I think Simon is under rated, he had real potential at the time I thought he would have given Tito a really tough fight. But Simon threw his career away.

Wright was a great light middle and should be regarded as one of the better fighters in that divisions history but in terms of P4P sense he doesn't rank highly, he had skills and ability just not the legacy.

 

He got taken to hell by a Green Vargas.

Trinidad was finished when Wright fought him. His best wins are 2 over Mosley, who is a borderline ATG at a weight he doesn't excel in. Did I see someone say Quartey was elite when Wright fought him?

Give it a rest he is rated just fine.

 

Yeah, that's fair enough. I'm not suggesting he was the same fighter, and he was a lot more open than he would be later on in his career. However, a future great should still have dealt better with a fighter as crude as Vazquez.

It would be unfair to use the Vazquez fight to completely undermine what he achieved later, but if Winky was a more hyped fighter people would make a bigger deal of it. As far as I could see no-one had made any reference to it in the thread.
