Winky Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs), out of action for 14 months since losing a decision in a 170-pound fight to Bernard Hopkins, could challenge middleweight titleholder Arthur Abraham of Germany in early 2009, Wright told ESPN.com. He said HBO is holding a date for him in the first quarter, probably in January, and that the focus has been on Abraham, who wants to fight name opponents in the U.S. "Definitely, that is what we're talking about," Wright said. "That's what HBO wants. They want me and him to fight. That is cool. As long as I am getting paid. He's a champion, let's go fight, so I am cool with that. I want it. I want people to see me fight the best. I want to show Winky is still one of the best fighters out there. I'm going to go out beating a few of these dudes." Abraham (27-0, 22 KOs) will defend his belt for the eighth time Oct. 4 against Raul Marquez (Integrated Sports PPV). Chris Meyer of promoter Sauerland Event said he's spoken to Golden Boy about putting Abraham-Wright together, although they aren't committed yet because Abraham needs to beat Marquez and then they want to see what happens Oct. 18 with Hopkins-Kelly Pavlik because Abraham most wants to face Pavlik.

Not a good fight for Abraham.

Whatever happens, Winky needs to get back in the ring. Abraham would be an interesting fight and if AA wins then it makes the Pavlik fight even bigger, good stuff.

I agree, although I think the Pavlik camp loves this development. Abraham is a bigger threat to Pavlik than Winky IMO.

Good matchup. Should be a competitive fight and a nice payday for both guys. Hope it gets made.

I heard HBO are holding Jan 9th for Wright to. If he fights Abraham it could be very interesting. I think the fight will be very slow and not exciting action wise, but it will be a good tactical battle.

Will be good to see what Winky has left.

I would have to go with AA in this one though.

Interesting fight. Impressed if AA takes this fight as it is a very dangerous one and could end up wrecking the potentially mega-fight between AA and Pavlik.

i think Arthur Abraham can pull it off. He has tight defense similar to Winky, but more explosive on the offensive end. Not to mention Winky has not been in action for quite sometime.:thumbsup

If Artur gets the win and Pavlik is still undefeated then what a fight that becomes. If the right marketing is used it could potentially tap into the mainstream. To me Pavlik is one of the most marketable fighters out there especially from an american viewpoint. Make Arthur into a seriously nasty villian and everybody is laughing to the bank.

If this fight does take place you have to go with Abraham. Similar d, but the much more dynamic offense and more power than Winky has ever dealt with.

I think this is wishful thinking on Winky's part. Pavlik/Abraham has been in the works since the first Pavlik/Taylor fight. Both men have had other business to tend to, and HBO gave Arum a tenative January 09 date for Pavlik/Abraham a long time ago.

Boxing fans have wanted Pavlik/Abraham more than just about any other fight around that weight. Team Pavlik, Top Rank, Sauerland, Arthur, Kelly, and HBO all want this fight. I seriously doubt if anyone is going to let Winky get in the way.

In addition, Kelly Pavlik has shown near total disdain for Winky, and Bob Arum pretty much hates him. Again, I think it's wishful thinking on Winky's part.

If Abraham fought Winky before or after Pavlik it would be a great fight. Maybe a bit boring in the first few rounds but it would heat up near rounds 4 and 5. I think it would be a very tough fight for both men, I give the edge to Abraham because of his offense and youth. He throws more heavy shots then Winky and at this age I dont think Winky can work and be busy enough to out point Abraham. I say it would be about a 117 - 112 UD win for Abraham, but you never know one of these two guys could land a bomb at any moment and end it with a nice KO. Arthur with his more intense head and body attack and Winky with a stiff counter punch followed up by a combination.... you never know.
