i remember when winky was deemed invincable and was above calzaghe in the pound 4 pound rankings. there was a thread that said how to beat winky wright. due to winky's very solid defencive game follwoed by good counters and great jab. and everyone said in unsison "Calzaghe" this was before lacy i believe. workrate and smart pressure gets winky in all kinds of trouble. the weakness about wrights defence is thathe covers up so much that if he gets swarmed he cant fire back effectivly. also when a southpaw vs a southpaw usually the more aggresive fighter wins but winky will win a few rounds
Two things: 1. Kessler would beat Winky prime for prime. 2. A busy but small and mediocre Soliman gave Winky all he could handle. Calzaghe wins rather easily.
I disagree on both accounts. Kessler is bigger, more active and I don't see any good reason for thinking Winky would win. Soliman was solidly away in the fight and did not get any of the close rounds. I think Winky won, but Soliman made pretty much all rounds quite even just by being busy.
that's an insult to winky. a guy who's been avoided (legitimately for a change) most of his career, eventually gets his shot and nails down mosley twice, tito and gets a draw against hopkins - against a guy who's fought legitimate contenders in his division but lost to a quality fighter who's never fought a top fighter in his prime. oh and also, team kessler pulled out of a challenging fight against miranda to chase a euro champ for belt leverage... be serious.
I was thinking the samething. It's just another ploy for Calzaghe fans to make Joe look better than what he is.
Lacy is the best name opponent he looked like a superstar against. Please tell me which fight Calzaghe was at his very best. The yr., day and fighter?
i think kessler is calzaghe's best scalp because kessler fought a host of top ranked fighters in the division prior to fighting joe. lacy, tbh, was a US hype machine.
That might have been his best performance against the best 168Iber but if he wasn't in his prime against Lacy, than how can he be in his prime against Kessler when he was a yr. older in age?
the whole eseence of the calzaghe argument is that we don't have a benchmark for his prime because he never fought a top world class fighter in it. i know i keep going back to this but this is what makes calaghe's career unique in a very sad way. excellent fighter who never wanted to test himself. but i'll put it another way, i think the kessler win defines joe's career better than lacy's does for the reason i stated before.
Calzaghe on points in a close but clear decision. As said before Soliman gave Winky fits and he is a few divisions below Calzaghe.
