Going deeper than just 'oh JC was never beaten'.
    Who has the better resumé

(interesting to see how this one pans out!)

as close as I've ever seen for one of these. Winky's best wins are Mosley, Trinidad and a damn good showing against Vargas. Joe C's are Lacy, Eubank, Kessler and Hopkins (Jones doesn't count). On the whole, taking into account how shopworn Trinidad and Hopkins were respectively, I'd put them pretty close. I voted for Joe as he defended his title against a number of B listers during his time and the Eubank win pushes him just over the edge from a tie.

Both cleared out their divisions eventually.
So you gotta compare who they fought.
Winky fought more champions, though!! Gotta be pointed out.
(Winky was dodged & ducked.. most-feared man in boxing for a long-time; while JC.. well, we all know he wasn't all that fussed about leaving Wales/the UK to go chase the stateside big names!)

    So we have for Calzaghe:

    Great/Excellent:
    44 yr old B-Hop (via close-ish Split)

    Very Good:
Eubank (verging on higher.. conflicting thoughts.. hah)

    Good:
Kessler (yes, Kessler could at a stretch go into 'Very Good' above but he refuses to fight 'Very Good' opposition-- Andrade being his only other major win... & maybe he really is scared of giving him a re-match), Lacy (though at the time he was only a young prospect), Bika.

    Mediocre:

Plenty... but notable: Manfredo Jr & washed-up version of the already washed-up post-Ruiz Roy Jones Jr, Veit?.

    ---

    So for Winky:

    Great/Excellent:
Mosley x2 (at the time Mosely was considered p4p t3 at worst), Tito (only previous loss was to B-Hop... and Winky wasn't a big-mw nor one to use that strength, either.. even if he was), Taylor DRAW (coming off the back2back Decision's over B-Hop... but many thought Winky won)

    Very Good:
Ike Quartey, arguably Vargas (even though on paper it was a loss)

    Good:
    Bronko McKart

    Mediocre:
    Numerous Europeans.

--it's close but I give it to Winky just about.

Calzaghe had more easy defences..... but at the same time BEAT better opposition.

well, another way of looking at it.. is to take all their major-conquered opponents and stack 'em up against each other.

I'd have to go with Winky's foes (SSM, Tito, Taylor, Ike Quartey, arguably Vargas) over JC's (44 yr old B-Hop + Eubank + Kessler... + Lacy I guess...).

Winky beat more Champions, though, I believe...

Had JC beaten Calzaghe before Taylor, though..(i.e. been the one to end Hopkins' dominance.. albeit at a catchweight, or even 168!, rather than strictly-160) then I guess it would swung that little bit the other way... and I'd say Calzaghe just about.

Looking at stages of career... and records up to that point.. you gotta say:

The Tito that Winky beat > The Eubank that Calzaghe beat.

The Mosely that Winky beat > The Hopkins that Calzaghe beat

Then undefeated (post-Hopkins) Taylor Draw + win over Ike Quartey >=< Lazy (young-prospect) + Kessler (untested before... and not actually tested after by another legit champion, either)

    that goes either way.

**Kessler who to this day, has not fought any of the other 168lb champs...-- Bute & Froch await you, Kessler!

Agreed -- I would just add that the first 2 wins over McKart are generally underrated, or forgotten all together.

Winky by a landslide!!! Winky has beaten legends in their prime such as Sugar Shane Mosley twice and dominated Felix Trinidad, who has Calzaghe beaten!?!? uhhh.Lacy? Kessler? both of these fighters were overhyped and have not beaten anybody yet and Lacy is gettin his ass kicked whereva he goes now,so dats not lookin good for joe,Joe really lost 2 a past prime B-hop,so i dismiss dat robbery win ova B-hop,so far all i see in his resume is a victory ova a badly shot/washed up Roy Jones!!.NOT HARD 2 FIGURE OUT!!! WINKY WRIGHT=LEGEND JOE CALZAGHE=OVERRATED FRAUD

Obviously Winky has the better resume: Two wins over a prime Sugar Shane Mosley, dominated a not yet faded Felix Trinidad, fought (and should've got the decision) against a prime undefeated Jermaine Taylor. The guy even had the sack to end his 21 month retirement at 37 and fight the most feared guy in the sport Paul Williams.
Not only has he fought the best and never ducked anyone. He's pulled off major upsets against a couple sure fire Hall of Famers.

Calzaghe fought European journeymen his entire career until beating Mikkel Kessler (questionable resume himself) and Jeff Lacy (he may have turned out to be overhyped, but at the time he looked like the real deal). Otherwise, he beat a close 44 year-old, but still not out of his prime Bernard Hopkins in a controversial decision. (I love B-Hop and Hate Calzaghe, but I think Calzaghe did win unanimously). It is almost hysterical how Joe sees his crowning achievements to be beating a 40 year old way past his prime Roy Jones Jr. Calzaghe's wouldn't go near this guy in his prime, but now he puts the name on his resume like he beat the REAL Roy Jones.

As a match up this is an interesting one. The ultimate Offense vs The ultimate defense.

I think this would've been an excellent match stylistically and perhaps the biggest test of Joe's career (if fought closer to 2002).

Im having a hard time picking a winner, but I think (as much as a I don't like Calzaghe) Joe would win a tight decision.
