    I didn't forget them :hi:

I liked you until it said 'ultimate Offense vs ultimate Defense'. Winky don't throw a lot and is a counter-puncher... then we have an offensive, ultra-high work-rate boxer in Joe Calzaghe (admittedly lacking power hence why I don't like 'ultimate'). & while Winky's defense is great for him soaking up shots against boxer-punchers leaving him unscathed..., he can be touched plenty by someone like Joe Calzaghe (who like PW is a Southpaw.. and a high work-rate one throwing shots from all angles). That Shell is still legendary though, I just wish Winky had been more active & not so avoided. In his prime, he had the potential to hold almost every title from 154 through 160 to 168 (anything Calzaghe wasn't holding).

Winky wouldn't be half as banged up... but he would lose a competitive points-decision, even at his prime. That's reality, here.

Take Joe Calzaghe, though... & put him up against a PRIME Roy Jones.
Now that's interesting.. to see if Joe can touch Roy in a meaningful way...

or Joe Calzaghe vs. an enlarged prime-Pernell Whittaker! Could any of Calzaghe's 110 punches per round catch Sweet Pea in an effective manner? (This while ofcourse Joe has to deal with a classy counter-fighter himself!)

Even a prime-Toney vs. Calzaghe 10 years ago is bloody interesting (I would actually pick Calzaghe in this one... though I do wonder how eastside views Toney as far as greats of this closing generation go?)

    ---

Anyhow, as far as Careers go... in decoration: they're equal. Both were undisputed at their stomping-ground weights. So it comes down to the resumé... and I think Winky wins that (close but clear given the context of when he fought the fighters on his record).

Joe's saving grace is that he was UNDEFEATED & a p4p t3 once Floyd retired & he had beaten Bernard (albeit a 44-year old! by split-D).

Sugar Shane was not in his prime when he fought Winky. he was 33 years old and well above his natural best weight class.

    "well above". lol.

if he was so 'well-above'... why did he fight Oscar there in their re-match?
If he felt SO weaker than everyone else.. why did he fight Winky after Oscar?

Mosley says it himself, he's a BIG 147-pounder. He's struggling to make 147 now due to age (even Roach knows & said this when asked about fight possibilities waaay before the Hatton fight).... SSM can't cut weight so easily anymore & he's gotten all the 'man-strength' he's gonna get now. Vernon Forrest -- whooped Mosley...when he was considered p4p no1... and now Forrest is arguably the single-best fighter @ 154 (since no-one wants to fight Winky & Paul Williams, like Winky now, seems set on staying at 160 where no weight has to be cut).

Also, I suggest you look at the way they fought. Winky took Mosley's best shots. Not because Mosley doesn't hit hard (hell, he's a welter who hits like a good middleweight!) but because he has a great shell-defense & a great chin!

Winky's a counter-fighter, slick & intelligent.. he plays chess! He aint a pressure-fighter or a bully who will use roughouse tactics... like a Vargas or Mayorga... (B-Hop @ 170-175). Weights barely any issue for Winky when fighting people who are what.. 5lbs smaller??
Funny actually, didn't Mosley layeth the smackdown on Vargas @ 154 TWICE. KO'ing him?
This AFTER getting picked apart by Winky. Yes, 154 was 'so uncomfortable' for Mosley his whole career.

Winky Wright ahead of Joe? Come on you guys know boxing better than this I hope. Joe was undefeated and kept on winning. He beat Hopkins and Winky did not. Winky was good but not at all close to Calzaghe's skill level. Not close. Winky did beat Shane, but Calzaghe beat Jones and Hopkins which is better than anyone Winky ever fought. Tito was above his weight and Mosley was moving around too much. Calzaghe much better.

Winky has a star studded resume with prime champions.

Joe, as a great fighter, only has has-been stars on his.

    JMO, I could be off...

Well for this comparison lets look at the Jones Jr and Hopkins that Slappy fought shall we?

That kind of evens it out a bit seeing as Hopkins was 10 years older than the Mosley you mentioned and Jones was 7 years older and totallly shot.

This is a no contest, Winky Wright is a greater fighter than Slappy Joe.

Slappy was a cowardly **** who only fought his contemporaries when they were way, way past their best. You couldn't lay that accusation at Wrights door, ever.

First, I think the OP's question is a good one - this is a close resume battle. But the above post is just ****. You're invoking the win over Jones as somehow comperable to WW's win over Mosely? You decry the Trinidad win over the weight and compare their fight vs. BHop as somehow on equal terms?

And have the nerve to have your second sentence be "you guys know boxing better than this I hope?". Re-read your post. I hope you know boxing better than that.

Winky did not beat all the good guys he fought and he fought many at times when they were not prime at all. Calzaghe was undefeated. If you are asking who fought better guys? Well maybe Winky. But many contenders fought great guys but lost to them all. What is the point? Calzaghe beat everyone who was in front of him. Winky did not.

It's a good question, but considering I believe Winky beat Vargas and Taylor, he is the clear winner.

Even without those two, Winky probably still has a very slight edge.

    Good thread.

kessler beating hopkins in the US was big...the scorecards maybe close but calzaghe finished the fight strong while hopkins was so weak that led people to believe that hopkins was shot

Better resume: Winky. Better career: Calzaghe.
