McCallum by wide decision over the far inferior, defensive minded ,Winky Wright. 10-2 McCallum over 12, 13-2 McCallum over 15. I like Wright, but, Mike does everything better than Winky. Stoppage unlikely. But if there was one, it would be Winky getting stopped. Once he felt the power of McCallum, Winky would most likely go into a defensive shell and just try to survive.
Wright 115-113.mccallum had too much trouble with the likes of Herol graham and a very young steve Collins to make him a favorite here.
If winning 118 - 110, and 117 - 111 twice in the hugely pro Irish Boston is your idea of trouble, then I suppose Mike did struggle with the granite chinned Collins. Meanwhile back on planet earth, everyone had had trouble with the highly elusive Graham at the time McCallum fought him with the exception of Kalambay.
I don't think its close at all. Winky is a very good fighter but its a total style nightmare for him. Mike McCallum by wide decision or stoppage if Winky decides to push the issue although I doubt it given his defensive mindframe. Winky's style is all about that turtle shell defense, he scores punches or "comes over the top of an opponents punches" then hides back in that shell. Winky had crazy long forearms that he folded over the front of his body (his elbows are almost at his hip bone), it was like a wall and nothing could get through. Only problem is that the body snatcher is one of the best counter punchers and body shot artists we have ever seen. I see the early rounds with Winky trying to test him out and just getting eaten up in the body, everytime he opens up that shell (boom!) McCallum is touching him and even if that shell is up Mike bangs hard to the body with wide shots around the guard. I see Winky retreating after 4-5 rounds and does little the rest of the fight trying to survive. Winky's style reminds me of a less aggressive version of the English boxer Michael Watson. If you watch that bout, a prime McCallum systematically breaks Watson down, beating him thoroughly and KOing him by the end. Watson tries that shell defense and is countered all night long he goes for broke in the late rounds knowing he is losing and McCallum destroys him. McCallum even shows off his smooth boxing skills, he takes off a few of the middle rounds, he is on the back foot peppering that educated jab, moving his head so skillfully just chilling like a boss - the whole time Watson is trying to smash him, Mike is totally unfazed painting his masterpiece - the guy was so talented.
Slow. Clap. Got the clap. Peter and Winky...tag team...WWE...the ding a lings. Legendary in status, taking the low road to hershey highway. The way the business is run will create ill will.
