winky wright, what could have been

With a name like Winky, he had to be good.

 

Winky was a great boxer with excellent skills and chin.
I think he had more than a decent career with being a top P4P in his time

His win over Adrian Dodson was a complete annihilation, in a fight I thought Dodson had a good chance.

In all great skillset and for me loved to watch him

 

I have seen at least 20 Winky Wright fights. And, I always thought he was a stand up guy, and a very good fighter. But, he falls short of great in every department except durability and longevity. Great fighters just don't struggle with fighters like bronco McKart.

 

I agree, but all boxer can have their bogeyman Tiberi for James Toney for instance there are plenty more, and Bronco McKart was no Bum far from it. Not saying Winky is an ATG but from my point of view he always boxed beutiful and from me great to watch

 

He took way too long to get his career reignited after the competitive loss to JC Vasquez in '94. He lost some prime years there.

He lost close decisions to Harry Simon and Fernando Vargas in the late '90s and when he held the WBO title it was low key, not much publicity. The big fights against big names didn't happen until 10 yrs after his initial title shot.

Was he avoided? Maybe but he could have helped himself by getting by Vargas and especially Simon.

He actually did better than I expected by finally getting money and notoriety for beating Mosely and Trinidad.

It was looking like his career was stalled.

He had been a pro for 14 years before getting the big $$.

I agree he had a bland personality and was not too articulate.

 

I worked at a night club that Winky used to go to in St. Petersburg while he was coming up. He never drink alcohol and was very respectful and treated the women politely. He told me that Laurent Boudiani was very good fighter and could be a champ in the future. The Frenchman did become champ and I thought he was underrated for sure.

 

I really had an attachment for Winky, since he was an alphabet titlist defending his crown in obscurity while I was just becoming a hardcore fan. It was great to see him beat Mosely and get the $$$'s he deserved. Unfortunately he had some discipline problems, which even his trainer admitted. And it seemed like after he had cashed in, his motivation waned quickly, as evidenced by the fact that he seemed to burn out on fighting after getting sliced up by B-Hop

 

He may have struggled with Bronco McKart, but he's the only guy ever who DIDN'T struggle with Ike Quartey, so those two things kind of balance each other out imho.

 

Very close to being lineal in two weight classes.

 

He could completely shut out fighters of certain styles, no matter how talented, but Paul Williams' style was his kyptonite. His shelling up would allow the 100 punch per round guys to get off.
