Look at it. Canelo vs Kovalev winner is fighter of the year, imo anyway. And I'll breakdown who stands against them.

Canelo will have Jacobs and Kovalev, 2 champions, one prime, the other 2 weights above him, a monster and a guy who's easily top 15 pfp.
Kovalev will have Alverez, Yarde and Canelo, so a win over a promising "contender". A rematch win over a guy who beat him like a drum last year, who is one of Kovalev's best wins. And Canelo, top 5/3 pfp, who despite coming up 2 weights will be a top 5 Kovalev win.

Both of them records are hard to beat imo, but I'll take a look at the obvious options.

Let's say he wins his Joshua rematch, 2 wins over Anthony Joshua? Surely that's close? Absolutely, but not better imo.
Ruiz proved what people knew about Joshua. We knew it would happen, just not who would do it. But make no mistake, that's not to discredit the win, as it was tremendous upset, which only @CST80 saw coming. However, PFP, a win over Anthony Joshua is above a win over Jacobs or Alverez, they are more or less on par with one another. And a second win over him is definitely not on par with a win over Kovalev, or a won over Canelo AND Yarde.

Does a single title defence and a win over Gvozdyk put him in conversation? Not imo but maybe in the mind of some.

A win over Garcia is good win, but not as good as a win over Canelo, who's easily higher on the pfp list now than Garcia was at the beginning of the year, then a win over Porter? He's top 5 in the division, now and then, he's on par or better than a guy like Jacobs or Alverez imo. And he's unified now. However, he just doesn't have a win to match a win over Kovalev, or one to match both Canelo AND Yarde.

Manny has a win over Thurman, which is a very good win. In fact **** it, given his age, it's a great win.
But imo Thurman and Broner aren't good enough to match up to Jacobs and Kovalev or Canelo, Yarde and Alverez.
It comes down to the fact that Broner was coming off a draw and loss and wasn't very active, and that Thurman was coming off a single win from a large stretch of inactivity with an injury.
Alverez, Yarde, Canelo, Kovalev and Jacobs all have good momentum.

Given his age it's arguably more impressive tho.

An underrated choice imo, a win over Prograis and a win over Ivan Baranchyk as well, very impressive. Especially when you consider that in his first fight after winning yeb title he faced Regis Prograis, who was arguably #1 140lber and a beat him and took his belt. So 2 good wins, a unification and a possible FOTY? Seems like the same situation as Spence.

Great year for boxing tho all in all. Shame in 2 weeks with have a ****ing YouTuber wankfest with 2 ****ing champions on the undercard of guys making there debut.

The winner will earn the title of Fighter of the Year EXCEPT if Ruiz returns another wank to Joshua.

Agreed. Yarde + Jacobs were huge wins. Also agree with GGGfans, if Ruiz beats Joshua again he will probably be given it though.

Good list @George Crowcroft , will Nonito Donaire be on that list IF he pulls an upset against Inoue ?

Im favouring Canelo to win but as for your OP.. I dunno.. Gvozdyk & Prograis are (when you apply full context) excellent wins & maybe better than a 2019 Kovalev.. Those are young undefeated prime fighters at there peak.. & a guy [Canelo] who turned in a positive drug test will forever have an asterisk attached too.. Dchenko (a relative novice by comparison) is matching Canelos performances give or take a round & barring the chin..

Taylor won the WBSS. Beterbiev walked through Gvozdyk to unify.. Canelo will have beat Kovalev who is just a few month shy of 37. Yes, 37.. like most of his wins*.. old..

Jacobs? Well.. good fighter yes, but again his MW days are over.. & he'd been beat twice already too.. hey, your opinion is your opinion but boxing is a young mans game mostly unless your Manny Pac..

Canelo is expected to win here. Taylor, Manny, Ruiz, Beterbiev etc were underdogs or only slight favourites.. the manner of the victory will defo matter here too..

If Canelo wins, absolutely. Top 5 MW and top 3 LHW.

If Kovalev wins, he has low-end-top-10 LHW and #1 MW.

If Kovalev wins big deal he beat a blown up juiced MW and maybe wasn't as shot as many expected.

If Clenelo wins it's either due to corruption or Kovalev being washed up(maybe both) This fight is just the usual Vegas ****.

    Inoue?

Rodriguez an unbeaten young champ (lights out) and titlist Donaire (providing Monsta wins big) is better than anyone any of the op opponents mentioned, and NOT more shot than Kovalev at this point, see recent results.

I think Ruiz-AJ will split wins and powers to be hyping up the Canelo win will pick him, but Monsta is making this sport look easy while beating actual champs.

Canelo if he wins might take it.

His haters can pretend Kovalev is walking around with a wooden stick , but reality shows Canelo is fighting a LHW who just captured a title and defended it against a young and dangerous top 10 ranked mandatory.

A little past prime he might be , but that only matters against other top rated LHWs. It doesn't and shouldn't factor into the equation against tiny guys with a weak punch and flat feet from two divisions bellow.

Take for example Golovkin who is a year older than Kovalev and supposedly lost his prime years ago. Being on the slide doesn't mean a guy like Errol Spence can hop up two divisions and take care of him.
GG would beat Spence ans everybody knows it.

Canelo having no business at 175 evens out the playing field against Kovalev.

If he overcomes this massive risk he's achieved greatness for himself and is no doubt a top FOTY candidate. :lupie:

If the guy who wins does it in decisive fashion, this could be the fight of the year. If he wins by BAD decision or by some fluke, either man, it’s just another bad fight. The bar is set pretty high for fight of the year. Neither man has been in a fight that would rank top 5 for a long time. I hope they both bring their best game and that the winner is clear and decisive. That’s all I want from this one.
