yeah, it's got to be him, or some of the mob figures that were fixing fights. Love Lamotta's description of his fixed fight (paraphrased): I hit him with a jab, and his eyes started to glaze over already and I thought uh, oh ...
Don King is singlehandedly responsible for the explosion of HW boxing during the 70s. You take him out of the picture and guys like Norton and Shavers are no hopers, journeymen. And think about Leon Spinks. Without King, could he have shook the world?:huh
I would take out Michael Buffer...........anyone could say "Let's get ready to rumble". And I dare think many a man would do it strictly for the right to see the fight.:deal
This ^^^^^ Also the old ex-convict Bernard Hopkins. He's seriously damaged the popularity of boxing in the USA with his "headbutt & hold" style.
i thought luis resto came across in that documentary, as one of the most honest and good people in it. the man did what he was told to do, by his trainer panama. he knew what he was doing was wrong, but he had no idea it would end so tragically and would still be being talked about even now. put yourself in luis resto's position for a change, your not exactly the golden boy of boxing, and someone as intimidating as panama lewis is saying to you, look, were gonna not play by the rules here. what you gonna do? say no panama, im making a stand, im not doing this? are you gonna stand up to him? would you stand up to your boss, the one who pays your wages, if he told you were gonna cheat to give ourself's an advantage here?
I dunno about that. King was a weasel, and screwed a lot of people, but he also made a lot of GREAT fights happen. - And he brought the sport massive international TV exposure. - And really, he was as much a part of the "colorful pageantry" or whatever of the 60's (and to some extent) the 70's boxing scene as Ali, Kosell, Lederman, etc. I can't imagine any of those big fights, without King (the guy you loved to hate) standing in the back of the ring after it was over, big hair & big grin, shouting "I love America!" King actually made the sport better, as far as the fans go. Arum, on the other hand, has done nothing but destroy it.
Not anyone, too many implications Don King & Bob Arum are two people that I would be happy to see walk away from the sport though
Eh.. Good points :conf Maybe someone other would do those things if he wasn't around.. Even if not, I struggle put up with the idea that anyone who doesn't give a damn about boxers can be good for boxing.
