If he beats Juan Francisco "El Gallo" Estrada in their anticipated super flyweight title rematch on April 6th, he will have put a flourish on a near decade of dominance - going, officially as of today, 46-1 (40) since his loss to Kenji Oba towards his (perhaps - there is controversy as to whether he made his pro debut against Yaegashi, with sources claiming he was 8-3 heading in under a different name) freshman year's close in early 2010. In truth, his one loss in that span is a controversial one (a technical decision against Carlos "Principe" Cuadras Quirizo in 2014), and in many fans' eyes he is undefeated over nearly fifty professional contests, with a sickeningly high rate of stoppage for his weight range...and his occasional dabbling in the Siamese pastime of scraping the bottom of the barrel for record-padding (with no small number of debuting and low-experience rabble) more than compensated for by his sensational 2017 alone, in which he immortalized himself in a breakout six month span with a pair of victories bumping Román Alberto "Chocolatito" González Luna from his pound-for-pound number one perch, and then proving it no fluke in an even more brutally hegemonic rematch.

If he yet again vanquishes a Latino rival in a second encounter, is he automatically 1st-ballot to Canastota? Is his ticket already punched?

Already the most dominant Thai since this guy and his brother retired... Don't see how he already isn't HOF bound, unless he completely tanks the rest of his career or something....

Even if he does...so? :sisi1 I think even the harshest critic in this sport has to accede that a super fly entering his mid thirties ought to be forgiven even a steep & precipitous decline.

I mean, we still think Chocolatito gets in his very first year of eligibility, don't we? Granted, his résumé has a bit more quantity of quality than Wangek's, but you can't argue with (functionally) a 47-0 run with forty knockouts and dethroning (and then hitting reverse and rolling the back tires over) the p4p king. If anything might damage his chances among the pickier members of the BWAA, it would be his skimpy presence in world title bouts. Not that going 6-0 (3) for world titles against Sato, Mukai, Choc x2, Gallo, and Díaz is anything whatsoever to scoff at, but numerically it casts him in a much less robust light than many others (both in the Hall and on the bubble) with meatier runs.

I'd say he'd probably get in even if he loses to Gallo in the rematch. Depending on when he retires and which class he occupies, it might not be first year, but he's been in enough high profile fights and scored enough high profile wins to be granted entry to the Hall at some point.

But yeah, if he beats Estrada a second time, he's a lock.

Already has better wins than Khaosai Galaxy, and he's a HOF boxer, a possible ATG at the weight (depending on who you ask).

However, it's not totally fair to judge until his career is over.

It feels like some people seem to think the wins over Gonzales and Estrada were flukes.

Hmm, I hadn't really considered it before, but if he had wins over Roman Gonzalez (2X) and Estada (2X) then that's a pretty outstanding series of scalps as far as the lighter weight classes go. Obviously the Gonzalez wins loom largest, but anyone who follows the smaller divisions at all know that Estada is extremely good. Sort of like Gonzalez' Rosendo Alvarez. It's not a perfect metaphor, but it conveys the general point.

Throw in Wangek's previous short reign as WBC super flyweight champ for bonus points.

He also gets points for beating the delightfully-named 'Young Gil Bae' two fights ago.

When you consider the disparity in legacies, being part of he HOF isn't the most meaningful accolade.

So, what - nobody should care about who gets in just because there is the occasional Gatti or Stallone in there among the ATG's?

Sor Rungvisai is already a future HOF fighter to me and is easily the best Thai boxer along with Khaosai Galaxy. But he still doesn't get much respect or attention even after beating Chocolatito and Estrada. I'm pretty confident that he'll beat Estrada again in the rematch. And if he does win I do hope he gets more big fights and attention from casual fans.
He's like a Thai version of Rocky Marciano in terms of his boxing style.

Khaosai isn’t as great as Veeraphol or Pone Kingpetch IMO. Might not even be as great as Muangsurin.

SSR also has an underrated skill level based on the Estrada fight, good judge of distance, timing and counter punching skills. Of course he is primarily a bulldozer.

For me, SSR is already a top 10 super flyweight. But is the 8th ranked super fly worthy of a HOF placing?

The HOF is rubbish and not a good way to measure quality anyway, but for me, if he beats Estrada again then beats Yafai I’m happy to have SSR even higher on my super fly list.

He wouldn’t be anywhere near a top 150 of all time (well, not inside of it anyway) but I’d rank him higher than Khaosai and he’d have a decent argument to be ranked higher than Veeraphol and Kingpetch in terms of ATG Thais.

So an ATG at super flyweight (light resume but he has such high points, higher than perhaps any super flyweight champ in history) and with a little bit more can add even more to his resume.

Not sure how long his prime goes on from here though, I was concerned by his performance last time out. Hopefully it was just a case of showing no respect.

One of my favourite fighters right now though, always happy to see the Thais doing well of course.

Yeah, pretty much. I’m sure it’s a really lovely occasion for the fighters themselves, but we should not use it in any circumstance to measure the ‘greatness’ of a fighter or see it as a genuine sporting accomplishment.
