Wisest next fight for Cotto:

I would love for Cotto to beat Canelo and then Chavez Jr. Would be epic.

What do you think is the wisest option in front of him, and why?

I picked these potential fights because:

Canelo - Needs a name on his resume, has to step it up eventually, might see Cotto as a fading legend and good stepping stone. Also, financially this could be a good money maker for Top Rank/GBP.

Martinez - Guy is looking for name fighters willing to take him on. Probably sees Cotto as beatable but profitable fight.

JCC Jr. - For the same reasons as Canelo.

Pac rematch - I think Pac is looking to go out on top. If the Mayweather fight doesn't happen, I could see Pac trying to cash in one last time against Cotto, a known opponent.

Mayweather rematch - Mayweather is all about high reward/low risk fights. Probably sees this as an easy way to make $25mil for beating a guy a second time

Paul Williams - Could be a fight Cotto might take because Paul isn't exactly a wrecking ball. Also, Paul could use the exposure if he plans on staying around.

Someone else?

I voted "Mayweather rematch" because Cotto and Mayweathers first fight was such a battle that really could have gone either way.

I wonder who would get more credit for beating Cotto.
Pacquiao did it in 2009 after Cotto got annihilated by Margarito and had a though fight with Clottey and it was a catch weight.
Now it´s two years later and Cotto has looked good in his last three fights. Seems like he has improved a bit.
:think I think it´s a good fight since Cotto is considered the nr 1 guy in his division.

I say mayweather would be the wisest decision. Financially speaking it makes the most sense, would get more money than pac vs cotto because most fans will think that the pac cotto rematch would ultimately end up with the same result. Cotto wins against mayweather and, well i dont think i need to explain the significance of that, if he loses he got one last big ass paycheck and can retire saying he lost to the number 1 and number 2 p4p fighters of his era. Not bad at all. I think canelo and chavez jr are too risky, and martinez would be career suicide. Im a cotto fan by the way, just saying how i see it.

 

Kirkland would be interesting. But a tune-up against angulo before this or chavez wouldnt hurt.

 

Chavez jr is the best option money wise and career wise. He'll earn another title in a different weight class and it's the easiest fight of all of them.

Probably a unification bout with Canelo. There is a lot of money to be made from a fight like that, and whoever wins it would be virtually guaranteed a crack at Mayweather. I'm sure Mayweather would love a chance at collecting the belt off who would be the clear best guy at 154, and I think Mayweather likes his chances against both guys, as neither Cotto nor Alvarez is a particularly big 154 pounder.

If I was trying to map out a plan for Cotto to retire on, it would, of course, be contingent on how he does against various parts of the plan. I'd want him to fight Canelo first, and should he win that then go on to fight Chavez at middleweight (if Arum is willing to let Chavez fight Cotto of course, but I don't know if he will because Arum probably doesn't want to risk a possible future cow picking up a loss.) He could then return to 154 and fight Mayweather, and that would give him more than enough money to retire on. If he were to win that (not likely, but you never know if Mayweather will get old in the ring one night), or even if he doesn't, his last fight should be a Pacquiao rematch. Pac's style means he'll probably wear down/slow down enough so that if he and Cotto were to fight in 2013 or later, it would be more competitive than last time. Cotto also appears to be a much smarter, more balanced fighter now than he has been in the past.

Gayweather will be famously remembered for the fights he never dared to take. Yet the constant fantasy matchups against those he never faced would make people think he won against them.

of $$$ and is a winnable fight for miguel. It's also a cinch
to make because arum makes $$$ either way, and we all
know Bob is strictly in it for the $$$. Cotto moves too much
for young saul, and would outbox the stationary kid.

 

Let's be blunt. TR and GBP aren't going to co-promote anytime soon. Since he's staying with TR, who else is there besides Pac for Cotto to fight? NO way Chavez Jr is a viable option. Too big for Cotto. I can't see him taking that fight. I can understand why Cotto wants to avenge his loss to Pac but they need to fight at a decent weight for both guys. Definitely needs to be higher than 145 that's for sure.
