With all the Jr. divisions, how many titles could SRR have won?

Forget the woulda coulda if the heat hadn't melted SRR against Maxim, could Sugar have won titles from 135 to 168?

 

It's quite likely that he would have won belts from 147 to 168. Not sure about 135 though.

Robinson started out as a lightweight and was only 136½ when he soundly outboxed Sammy Angott in his 2nd year as a pro... so today he would no doubt pick up his first title at lightweight. And with all the titles around, I don't think he would have too much trouble picking up some kind of belt in every division from 135 to 168.

 

He would have won the 135lb strap if it wasn't for politics

He would have beat Maxim in a rematch at 175, maybe could have dropped as low as 130lbs early in his career. I wouldn't pick many FW's to beat the FW amateur version of Robinson either

 

Maybe.....at a push. I don't think that he could have fought at any lighter weight than that though,as a fully grown adult.

 

Yes, everything from 135 to 175. (Not rescheduling the Maxim fight for cooler temperatures was a bad decision from a public health and safety perspective. Nobody believes a more active and aggressive Joey could have beaten Ray in a more moderate climate.)

On July 21, 1941, Robby should have beaten Angott for the lightweight title, and he easily could have snatched the WW crown from either Filthy Frizie or Cochran before Pearl Harbor ever took place. Hand him the JWW crown for the trifecta before 1942 even gets underway, and he'd be set for the next five years. Celebrate V-J Day by nabbing the title at 154, and he could retain that for another ten years if he chose.

As for the light heavyweight championship, that was clearly a one shot deal, win or lose. I doubt he'd have stuck around for Moore, even for a handsome payoff. Olson later projected challenging Marciano after beating Archie, but I suspect Ray just wanted to win the light heavyweight honors, then retire as he actually did. (The fact remains that he never again went after the championship at 175, even when the reactive Harold Johnson and deliberately harmless Pastrano held it.)

Late in his career, he might have been able to hold onto a junior middleweight championship as he wasn't able to consistently retain the honors at 160. I don't think making 154 would ever have been draining for him. He could have really put that division on the map.

 

After reading these pieces,I have changed my view somewhat. I have learned that yes,it would have been quite feasible that Ray could also have won the 135 crown. Thanks guys :good

 

No way does Angott defend the lightweight title against Robby.
He's obviously too over matched physically, and does well
simply to survive. (Does anybody else think Ray somewhat
resembles a predatory welterweight Hearns here?)

I don't really think that any fighter resemled Ray Robinson in his prime..
I saw him at MSG several times at his peak, and still think Sugar Ray was unique...They threw away the mold...

 

People also forget that Duran snubbed 140 to get at SRL. In today's climate, he'd have lifted titles at 126 and 130 before leaving his teens.

 

140, 147, 154, 160, 168. In an ideal world, potentially 135 and 175.

 

6 titles.. He lost at 175... By the way Hearns won that title two times and beat Virgil Hill for the title.. 10 defenses and undefeated and 5 years younger than Hearns.
