Joe Louis fought in a horrendous era against midgets and obese oafs, and still managed to look bad on a number of occasions.

Holmes's era wasn't much better, though at least the vast majority of his opponents were legitimate heavyweights.

In fact with the exception of the 70s and the 90s, most heavyweight champs fought in pretty crappy eras, making most H2H matchups heavily reliant on guesswork.

Just because you're not an ATG doesn't mean you can't occasionally beat some. McCall, Rahman, Douglas, Flynn, Spinks, Leotis Martin etc all won fights against top names without achieving one iota of their career accomplishments.

Wlad is more talented than Lewis and Vitali.

Wlad dominates Lewis like Vitali did and knocks him out like McCall and Rahman did.

    Quotes from Steward:

“Wladimir is gonna be the one I don’t think I could train a man to beat the way he is. I’m serious. I’ve never had a fighter – I went from Holyfield and all the guys I’ve worked with, never, Lennox – Wladimir is a very, very committed, very difficult fighter to beat. Because he won’t let you fight him. He makes you fight what he wants you to fight. But the biggest thing which I think people are not looking at is his speed for a big man. Tremendous speed. Foot Speed. He can move in, explode, move out, move back in, explode, and I’ve never seen anyone that could…move in and out and be in perfect balance,”

"Wladimir has better one-punch knockout capability than Lennox"

"Wlad has the best footwork, coordination and balance of any fighter I ever worked with. He’s the most accurate, single-punch knockout guy I have ever seen. A guy can be completely fine, not hurt, and Wladimir can put his lights out with one shot."

"Wladimir’s coordination is better and he is the most powerful natural talent than any other heavyweight I have worked with."

"In terms of jab, Wladimir is the best and after him I would put Lennox. In terms of boxing arsenal, Wladimir is better than Lennox."

Wlad is a nightmare matchup for Ali.

That rope a dope bull**** won't work against Wlad.

    Ali can't outsmart Wlad.

    Ali can't outbox Wlad.

Feather fisted Ali can't stop Wlad.

    Ali can't outpoint Wlad.

    Wlad would destroy Ali.

Prime Vitali is the only fighter in history who can beat Prime Wlad.

    Steward on Lennox Lewis:

"I said that he was my best heavyweight. Because he did accomplish and do things that Wladimir has not did. He had big fights, he knocked out opponents. Wladimir has more talent, but the one that you have to give the credit, to the people who have actually beaten good fighters. And Lennox beat more good fighters than Wladimir has at this stage, although Wladimir has more talent than Lennox."

I wouldn't definitvely tip either of the guys you mentioned to beat wladimir, even though I give holmes a very good shot. secondly, I don't take much stock in h2h matchups, but I recognize a shitty era when I see one.

Barring Ali and Lennox, I wouldn't definitively tip any top heavyweight to beat another H2H, though I'd certainly give Holmes a better shot to beat Wlad than Louis based on physical and stylistic attributes. If you rate a fighter's H2H ability primarily on the era in which he fought in then you're not going to have too many good names to play around with. Non-shitty eras have traditionally been the exception not the rule in the heavyweight division.

I agree with everything you said but that last sentence. I tend to believe that there is some middle ground. there aren't just shitty and non-shitty eras to me. there's a wide spectrum, not to mention, boxing doesn't universally accept the definition of "era."

Oh? Where was his boxing skill a few nights ago against Thompson? :blood
Where? I want the round, I want the minute and seconds. I've watched the fight a handful of times and each time Wlads non-boxing ability becomes more and more obvious.

I tell it like it is.
    Wlad can't box.
If it wasn't for Manny and mantra (!jab!Jab!the jab, the jab!) this guy may have gotten beat by one of the only heavyweight southpaws in history (that I'm aware of) that doesn't have an effective hook on either hand :)lol: :D ).

If I had a gun to my head... In order of confidence, prime vs. prime.
    To win:
    Foreman
    Vitali
    Ali
    Louis
    Tyson
    Lewis
To be competitive en route to decision defeat:
    Johnson
    Bowe
    Holmes
    Wills
    Marciano
    Liston
    Jeffries
    Norton
    Holyfield
To lose in a brutally one sided fashion, likely stopped:
    Charles
    Frazier
    Dempsey
    Schmeling
    Lyle
    Patterson
    Walcott
    Povetkin
    Moorer
    Baer
    Carnera
    Langford
    Willard
    Ingemar
    Sharkey
    Braddock
