Saw the black and white avatar and assumed you would list 20 HW's that you think beat Wladimir.

    I am pleasantly surprised :good

    Fair enough.

My point really is that eras like the 70s and the 90s are clear bright spots rather than merely the top of an evenly tapering pyramid of quality, competitiveness, depth and excitement. Of course there is a lot of middle ground, but few eras stand out like those did.

Interesting list, but would you honestly pick Joe Louis to beat Wlad even with a gun to your head? If there's any ATG I'd have total confidence in Wlad beating it's Louis, not because Louis sucks but because stylistically he'd have a horrendous time with Wlad. Low lead hand, flat feet, limited head movement, less than stellar chin and a tendency to struggle with good jabbers. I really can't see any way he wins, especially if Wlad gets to clinch him every time he closes distance to throw his combinations.

Conversely, Lyle's not an ATG but he's one fighter I'd give an outside chance to KO Wlad. He has the aggression, toughness, power and fearlessness that could make things very interesting. Someone like Briggs or McCall would have a chance as well. I think the type of fighter that beats Wlad doesn't necessarily have to be a great fighter, but possess the combination of attributes that can negate his greatest strengths.

agreed. anyone who sees it as an "evenly tapering pyramid of quality" doesn't really know boxing, do they? or at least heavyweight boxing.

You honestly think the current version of Corrie Sanders beats Wlad? Really?

Glad to see boxing fans finally outnumbering nostalgia fans on ESB. Only 30 nostalgia fans voting so far. I guess the classic forum is going fullsteam. Or maybe they're just finally seeing how amatatuerish thier 30-60s heroes were.:D

If Julius Long fought in the 40s he'd be 277(277KO)-1(robbery DQ against a whitey in Mississipi). It would be his last fight as the lynch mob would take the 7'0" 300lb Long out into the backwoods and teach him not to beat the snot out of 5-9 184lb whiteys.:-(

Neither may beat him, and they are far from ATG's, but I'd like to drop either Tua or Ike from the night they fought each other across the ring from Wlad.

Brutal hitting, iron chinned *******s that will take 2 good shots to land one of their own.

Those 2 broke all kinds of punch stat records, and i don't think I've ever seen 2 guys together like that, just eating massive shots from each other, when both guys are such well known power punchers.

Brewster in beating Wlad, and Peter when he KD Wlad 3 times showed nuggetty guys that keep the pressure on rattle Wlad.

Ike and Tua fit that perfectly.

The too fat, Kevin Barry trained version of Tua gets beat. The one from Ruiz/Ike that would walk through anything to land big shots is a nightmare for a guy that's hit the canvas over a dozen times, and still looks rattled under pressure.

As for Ike. I don't fall into the myth making around him, but that version would be Wlads worst nightmare.

Wlad may beat both, but he'd have to do something I've yet to see him be able to do.

I give him credit for still winning against Sam Peter in the first fight, but a better fighter than Peter would have finished it. Which I think thaisr versions of Ike and Tua were.

The only thing I will say about Wlad that is still bad is his chin. Even against Thompson he held on quickly when hit with even a light shot. Chin's dont get better.
