Inspired by http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=425610 How would the History of the Heavyweight divison be drifrent had there been no color line? While no one knows for sure. I hope to paint a picture of how it might have turned out. For sources I'm using http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4553 http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/achamp.htm http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/dynamite.htm I will also consult boxrec when needed Part 1 1885-1892. Historical Champion: John L. Sullivan. Sullivan and George Godfreywere soposed to fight in May of 188, but Godfrey pulled out. Latter that year Peter Jackso would stop Godfrey in 19 rounds. (There are 2 George Godfreys) 1889 Would see Sullivan defend against Jackson. I think that Jackson would have won under Queensbury Rules or London Prize Ring Rules. Under LPR I think Sullivan wins the first time, Jackson wins the rematch and rubber match. Jackson also defends against Jake Kilrain. In 1890 Jackson beats "Denver" Ed Smith. Stoping him in 5 rounds. 1891: In May Jackson and Jim Corbett fight to a 61 round no contest. He also gets by the crafty Joe Choynski. 1892: May beats Frank "Paddy" Slavin in 10 rounds. In September of that year Corbett beats Jackson.
Part 2: 1892-1897 Historcial Champion James J. Corbett After Beating Peter Jackson in September of 1892 Corbett makes no defenses of the championship in 1892. 1893: Corbett makes no defenses. Jackson and Joe Choynski tour the Mid West and eventuly New York fight exbitions as partof the play Uncle Tom's Cabin. 1894: Corbett beats Charlie Mitchell. In 3 rounds. 1895: Corbett is suposed to face Bob Fitzsimmons, but the bout dose not take place. 1896: Corbert and Tom Sharkey fight to a 4 round draw. The fight is stoped by the cops. In December of 1896 Bob Armstrong beats Charley Strong. 1897: March Corbett and Fitzsimmons finally meet. Fitzsimmons stops Corbett in the 14th round.
Part 3: 1897-1899. Historical Champion: Bob Fitzsimmons 1897: The day after he beats Joe Butler stopping him in 6 rounds Bob Armstrong loses a 7 round decision to Frank Childs. Putting an Armstrong/Fitzsimmons bout in jeperdy. Fitzsimmons makes no defenses the rest of the year. 1898: Fitsimmons dose not defend the championship this year eather. Childs will beat Armstrong twice that year. He also beats Klondike Haynes and Charley Strong. George Byers beats Childs. There is some historical debate as to rather or not Childs and Byers should be reconized as heavyweight champions. Both are clearly the two best heavyweights with Fitzsimmons inactive that year, but neather have beaten him. 1899: After not fighting for a year Fitzsimmons returns to the ring. His first defense of the year is against Jim Jeffries who stops Fitzsimmons in 11 to become the new champion.
part 4. 1899-1905. Historical Champion: James J. Jeffries 1899: Tom Sharkey gets second shot at being Champion. Jeffries wins a 25 round decision over him. 1900: George Byers and Frank Childs fight to a 6 round draw. Jeffries defends with a first round ko of Jack Finnegan, and against formor champion Jim Corbett. Stopping him in the 23rd. 1901: Jeffries makes a defense beating George Byers. He also beats Gus Ruhlin. Stoping him in 5. 1902: Jeffries defends against Bob Fitzsimmons (Who he beat to become champion back in 1899) & Denver Ed Martin. He stops both men. 1903: Jeffries fights and stops Corbett for the second time this time in 10 rounds. With a win over Martian and two wins over Sam McVey. Jack Johnson emerges as the #1 contender. 1904: Having beaten "The Akron Giant" Gus Ruhlin & "The Denver Giant" Denver Ed Martin. Can Jeffries beat the man known as "Galveston Giant" Jack Johnson? The answer is no Johnson dethrons Jeffries. Latter in the year John defends against Jack Munroe.
I hate to state the obvious, but : Fighters still got ducked without any "color line". Take away the color line, perhaps not much would change at the top.
