With No Discredit To Donaire, Did Montiel Get Old Overnight?

    The first thing that made me worry about Montiel was seeing that he came in the ring at 134, 16 pound heavier than he weighed in. I also noticed that his team was constantly massaging his muscles just prior to the fight, more than you usually see. Most trainers dont want to rub down any fighter before a fight because it relaxes your muscles, but I cant help but think they were doing it kind of "wake them up." Montiel had 48 fights coming into this one and won his first world title over a decade ago. H emay not be old in years (31), but his is ring years. This was his 21st title fight and he had been in a lot of tough fights. It wouldnt surprise me that even though he hasnt been at this weight too long, he has trouble making weight. Ive seen it in other fighter that one day their bodies just dont coopperate the way they used to and the weight doesnt come off as easily as it did just one training camp earlier.

    Don't let that Donaire win fool you. Montiel is a Class A fighter, Donaire just caught him with his best punch.

    Im not disagreeing with any of that. Donaire beats any version of him IMO. but, Im not takling about the fight itself or the KO. Im just talking about Montiel. Putting on 14 pounds after weigh in is a red flag for any fighter that there may be some struggle in camp.

    Not really, legit win. If you watched him vs. Castillo and years back, you could notice that he wasn't as effective at 118, but I don't think there was aging between the Hasegawa fight and yesterday.

    He came in heavy to withstand Donaire's punches but it didn't make a difference in the end.

    montiel just ran into a phenom.

    i've been following donaire's camp pretty closely for this fight, he claims to have been training harder than he ever has, robert garcia got in some tough sparring from oxnard and his conditioning coach has been putting him through some killer circuits.

    He has been having trouble with the weight, he told me in an interview that he will move up after this fight win or lose. But we shouldn't take anything away from Donaire either.

    The guy had never been KO'd before in his whole career, and Donaire ended it with one punch.

    The victory is above criticism of any kind.

    Your absolutely right, im not criticising the victory. Ive been watching Donaine for a while and have always thought he was a special fighter. He has that X factor that only a hanful of fighters have. Manny has it, Jones had it, Tyson had it, and I can see it in Donaire too. I dont want to overstate his career so far because he still has a lot to do, but hes unquestionable a major force in boxing.
