With No Discredit To Donaire, Did Montiel Get Old Overnight?

He's above his best weight and getting old for a lower-weightclass fighter, but seemed to be aging well and wasn't too far removed from his best super-flyweight level.

He had long found his level as a decent but unspectacular WBO champ, the Hasegawa( who was being overhyped as usual)win was an overachievement and his finest hour as far as as a big win goes.

This was a notable win imo because Donaire took out Montiel like potential future greats\borderline greats can often do to decent durable fighters, not because Montiel is a badass or a great Bantam.

in other words it shows Donaire is worth watching as possibly more than just being a good fighter, but it's really too early in his career to be doing anything other than just enjoying watching the guy fight and see where he goes next imo.LMAO at people saying he's already a great in other threads., most significant result in bantam history etc

 

Nope. It's the " punch that you don't see coming" is the one that did Montiel in. That's about the gist of it.

 

Nothing Montiel did while the fight lasted showed he had the style to beat Nonito.

 

No he didn't, he was caught with a good shot that he never saw it coming, he was fighting a faster and polished fighter, end of the story.

 

That is the thing, it was over so quick you couldnt fully judge his performance or where he is at, he got caught with a perfect counter, doesnt mean he is shot now

I was cheering for Montiel but going into the fight I knew it would be a tall task for him to get a win on Donaire. I was hoping that Donaire would run into a Montiel counter like the Hasegawa fight, but...needless to say...that didn't happen.

He just ran into a better bantamweight.

He made weight, and he looked strong and ready to go to war.

Nobody expected him to not lose that first round. Donaire gets into his rhythms rather quickly, and Montiel is a slow starter.

Montiel was starting to close in during the 2nd, and while that gave him his best chance of making Donaire taste his own power it also proved to be his undoing as he found himself in perfect range and position for that perfect, thunderous left hook.

It didn't look like a suddenly old or shot fighter getting beaten up for six minutes and then stopped because he just doesn't have anything left. It looked to be exactly following the script up until that hook landed: Montiel getting outboxed by the more athletic and technical guy while warming up, and then starting to stalk his way inside and find a home for his power (he just didn't get a chance, which was always a danger with Donaire's edge in speed).

Montiel is still viable (given that his health is OK - incidentally, have there been any reports on his neurological condition since last night?).

There was nothing in those six minutes that showed Montiel is any different than the fighter who lost a few early rounds and then knocked out Hasegawa to win the championship.

 

I think he just ran into a guy who might wind up to be a special fighter. It happens, although Montiel isn't at his best at 118.

 

:roll: Hasegawa is every bit as talented as people were saying. He wasn't entirely careful and attentive bell to bell and paid for it, getting knocked out by a huge puncher. **** happens.

He'll only learn and improve from the experience, IMO.

HH has since gone on to establish a presence at featherweight where he already has one quality win and could very well be picking up an even better one in a few weeks.

Every time a fighter is knocked out it doesn't mean "Whoops, they must have actually sucked and everything good said about them was just illusory!". That is stupid. In fact, both Hasegawa and Montiel are viable enough IMO that we could see a rematch for the WBC featherweight title down the line (assuming that HH retains it with a few defenses and Montiel dusts himself off and moves up in weight to collect a few rebound wins - both scenarios being ENTIRELY possible).

 

I interviewed Montiel last week and he said win or lose this would his last night at 118. That's a big indication that trying to continue making bantamweight was difficult for him.

But I also interviewed Donaire, and he said that he sparred guys at 130 and 135, and even they said they could feel his power.

Maybe all the extra weight made Montiel a little slower, but the end result would've happened eventually.

I think Donaire though he is an amazing fighter honestly he is a little bigger than these guys hes knocking out like this...

 

Hozumi is a good fighter IB.Lots of people were saying he was excellent(at least) and very notably talented.I don't know, i don't see that in him.imo he lacks poise and finesse.Could still improve those areas though, don't get me wrong.

And i wouldn't say Montiel has ever been a huge puncher.Very good, yeah, but he's not exactly Galaxy or Zamora imo.

I would back Hasegawa to get it done against him in a rematch, especially now after that KO.
