With No Discredit To Donaire, Did Montiel Get Old Overnight?

Montiel was pressing the entire fight and looked in control. And then WHAM!

I'm not sure that has much to do with getting old. Unless you think Paul Williams got old against Sergio Martinez, too.

 

Actually he had been getting BETTER and BETTER.

He got exposed by a better boxer and puncher. He already got exposed long ago by Mark Too Sharp Johnson. Go watch the tapes and you'll see why Donaire just finished the job.

 

Donaire is a special fighter and I don't see anyone around taking those belts from him not even close.

 

Just because he walked into a huge hook doesn't mean he's past his prime or over the hill, I would imagine montiel clearing up the rest of the division had he not run into donaire.

 

Yeah overnight he went from age 31 to age 61. Crazy ****!

 

Donaire did his job. Montiel tried to do his...Donaire adjusted first. Montiel beating the count shows he was in good condition.

It was a perfectly timed punch. Anybody lesser would've stayed down.

 

Donaire beat his ass, simple and plain.

He wasn't prime but he still was an elite fighter. It's just that he is small for bantam. He was facing a taller, longer, faster guy; who can also punch.

And Montiel's style is in between boxer puncher and counter puncher so he didn't match up well. He needed to be really close to Donaire, and he never seemed to understand.

You can tell because he came out trying to counterpunch from the outside, which he had no chance of being successful.

Good win for Donaire......now on to Agbeko who I think will easily defeat Abner, and has a good chance against Donaire.

 

As far as the weight yes that is possible because his father was actually not pleased when Montiel took this fight at 118 lbs because he felt it was time for Montiel to move up...side note: he might have also been a little worried about Donaire as thet opponent too...but obviously that's not what he was saying before the fight....anyways, yes Montiel was getting big for the weight but there were no weight concerns reported before the fight, he didn't look dry at the weigh-in and I thought the extra weight was probably a significant advantage. I didn't see any signs of rust or age in the two rounds he fought. Infact I think he showed a hell of a lot of ability/skill and fought a very good fight. Nonito just figured him out before he could figure out his own range/rhythm. Other then maybe going for a little too much too soon there really wasn't anything bad you could say about his performance. I mean really he got knocked out on the first right hand power shot he threw. You gotta through that shot sometime and frankly there isn`t much of a better time to try it out then near the end of the second round....cause if you have to waiting for the thrid or forth to try to find the range with that shot your pretty much giving up the possibility of a decision win anyways.

You guys also need to remember he was losing every round against Hasegawa before landing the ko punch. Also a couple of fights before that one he looked like **** against a guys whose name I cant remember until the fight ended in a technical decision of some sort.

 

Good post. Thats exactly the way I see it. A fight going to plan. Just one guys plan was better then the other`s.

As far as neurological reports I haven't heard any yet. I'm in my third year of medical school but honestly guys you don't need me or a a medical degree to guess that he'll probably be badly concussed after a shot like that

The good sign for him though is that he never lost conciousness. I'm not sure how he pulled that off to b e honest. But thats a pretty positive sign for him moving forward. The bad sign is what his legs did when he hit the canvas. If you look at where the shot landed it landed high on the right side of his head as he was moving into to the shot. If Montiel is right hand dominent that means that his dominent premotor cortex is on the left side of his brain. When his legs went all twitchy like that that was probably from his left hemispher crashing into the left interior surface of his skull. Cause of the motion at impact this means that his brain probably first bounced off the right side of his skull bouced back and then his left. If thats what happened I'd bet he bruised both hemisphers and probably will have a low to high grade concussion. I'm not an expert but I'd bet he'll have to take at least 4-8 months off sparring...if he were my relative I'd probably want him to take at least 8-10 months....at the very least he shouldn't go into a gym for any kind of work out until he's symptom free for 10 days.

 

Montiel just has poor defense and kept his guard down.

It simple basic stuff they teach in any gym, "Keep your hands up, cover-up, and bring back your punches quick".

Montiel didnt do any of that.
he shouldve known better, to not be slow and stationary against Nonito's fast crisp power punches.

He threw a lazy right hand and didnt bring it back quick, which is why he got nailed with a counter left hook.

I knew Montiel would be KO'd cause he always leaves himself open, and has done like that in past fights, cause most of his past opponents were cheap no-good boxers.
Thats why I never paid attention to Montiel, cause I knew he would someday be beat by a good clever fighter.

He just got beat by a better fighter, simple as that.

 

You have to give Donaire his due! Montiel got ktfo by a game Donaire.
