With No Discredit To Donaire, Did Montiel Get Old Overnight?

So Donaire has 2 years tops before he is past it?

Ya I can get your furstation dude b/c I think a lot of people see the thread tittle and miss interpret what your trying to say/don't read your opening comment. Perhaps a better thread title would have been something like did the 134 lbs Montiel was carrying help him or hurt him....or was montiel too old for the weight....probably get less few posts but more objective discussion...but whatever its all good you're the boss and I got where you were going with that at least.

 

I don't think he got old over night. When you fight the limited opposition he has fought, in what is a stacked weight division, people can tend to over rate a guy. Montiel is good, but he beat a severely weight drained Hasegawa to get the title. Hasagawa then moved up two weight classes and now fights at 126. Furthermore, Hasagawa hadn't beat anybody of top class either to get that title. 118 has been pretty stacked since Hasagawa and Montiel were there. Neither one of them fought, Mabuza, Perez, Agbeko, Mares, Darchinyan, etc.

Donaire would have done that to a lot of other 118 pounders too. Donaire is so fast and so precise, he will feast on any stiff, unathletic Mexican fighter. Fighters who will have the best chance to upend Donaire will be guys who fight at their own rhythm, don't wait for him, and who have some athleticism. Not sure there is anyone at 118, who Donaire would have issues with outside of Agbeko.
