With 'Old School Soul' who would be the top five in each division today?

    Right then chaps, here's one for you; Original 8 weight classes, one title belt, who would be the top five in each weight class from today's crop of fighters? Or three, if you really can't be arsed :D

    Which big super-Middlesex would still be major players at light heavy? Could Khan/Bradley still make waves at 147? Which of the light-flys are taking the **** and could cut a little less and still be quality?

    As not to complicate things too much, we still have 24-hour weigh-ins. So Pac is not going to be a Middleweight if he can't quite make Welter :lol: Also, as it's a very complicated and controversial point, I would also have included Cruiserweight! BUT, as I am not implicating same day weigh-ins, it would be the same top five we currently have, so forget about those guys if you will.

    ****ing tricky Flea, I got myself in few knots there!!!! He's my best, quick stab at it for now!!

    I was unsure about what to do with the "champs"? Are they just the number 1s in the division or the "man who beat the man" where possible? If its the numbera 1s then Pascal should go down to number 4 with every one above moving up a place and Mayweather should be dropped altogether for inactivity.

    Very good choices Luke, though I imagine Abraham would be a light-heavyweight gatekeeper/dangerous contender-type myself, not sure how he could make 160 as he is today, he seemed to be struggling towards the end :good

    I like how you've envisioned people not ducking and whatnot, that is very much part of 'old school' and I should've put something similar :good

    Up to each individual poster how he sees things unfolding in the above scenario of course, if you think Wlad and Vitali would have tofighr and Vitali would win (I disagree with both things wholeheartedly) that is yor choice :good

    Anything controversial will of course be challened :yep Hopefully this thread will inspire some thoughtful discussion.

    I've kinda mish-mashed a few divisions on how I reckon fighters from each would perform against each other.

    With Abraham, I'd imagine that he'd rather fight at 160 than 175.... and as such would just train differently or just de-hydrate. He's good enough to beat most fighters in that division, Williams has too sloppy a defence and will stand in front of him at some point.... I don't reckon the others are seasoned enough to beat him.

    I'm starting to think Pacquiao would beat Floyd, and that nobody knows it more than Mayweather himself. It's kinda like the Haye situation, it's easy to run your mouth off but when the moment came one did a runner and the other started whining about PED's.

    As you know I don't rate Dawson, the first time in ages he faced an opponent below 40 years old and slightly unorthodox he came up well short.

    Cotto probably has enough left to beat Mosley, but I could see Bradley making him uncomfortable and edging him out - though I wouldn't argue either way over that ranking.

    I couldn't find a place for any of the 140 at 147, Bradley is the obvious one but then who do you bump off?

    Beeston has the right idea Gaz :good I actually replied to your post extensively to try and help you out, tied myself in knots :lol: And then me iPhone conked out (probably for the best) but let's say the new rules are implemented today, a year down the line, assuming that the top guys from today's weights are still the main players, how for the top five fall in place once they've had time to find their feet?

    I think if Abraham can make the weight okay he might well be no.1 that murderous power could well do in Sergio (Id favour him to outmanouver/outwork Abraham though) and stop P-Dub, who would still be top 5 IMO bit would also play right into Abrahams hands, like Corrales P-Dub is a guy who likes to scrap rather than use his advantages, awful against Abraham.

    I think Williams would beat Pavlik, for sure. Pavlik is a bigger puncher than Martinez but I see no issues with Pauls chin; Martinez pulled something very special out of the bag that night. Doubt this Pavlik could do the same (and I personally think he'd be an 11-20 Light Heavy myself :yep)

    Bradley has a good shout against (current) Shane and Berto IMO. Possibly Cotto, but even with the pressure he lacks the pop and physicality to cause Miguel to fall apart down the stretch IMO.

    No love for Amir @ 147 lads? Would he get Ariza back to train him down to a more sensible 135lb physique rather than be a Welterweight bit-part player?

    :lol: That'd be General talk I guess. These things happen. Williams will come again and be pretty safe from sparking IMO.

    Martinez 'did a Nunn' essentially, a decent puncher pulling a beaut' out against a durable foe. Nunns was a better win (against Kalambay), naturally, but Sergios was sickening. What a noise, what a KO, what a fighter.

    Note: 'Doing a Nunn' can also be described as 'doing a Benevenuti' :yep

    TBH I tended to favour the bigger guys unless the smaller guys were either noticably better and/ or big for the lower weight class. Bradley doesn't really do enough of either for me.

    I agree with Williams, 1 KO from a punch he didn't see coming is not enough to convict him on the glass jaw charge.

    Berto is all flash limited substance. That's my take on him. Although I did have him to beat Shane before it was called off, mainly because Shane is past it.
