i wouldnt exactly say he cherry picked.....

the more i think about this... he came in the game at a bad time...

because he was too amateur for roy & bhop (based on time)
but too advanced for the jermain taylor & jeff lacy's

like either way no matter who he faught he would have never really got his respect... prime roy & bhop (mid-late 90's) probably would have waxed calzaghe

prime jt & lacy (early 00's) would have probably got waxed by calzaghe

poor timing... and really no way to know how good he is because he never had a career defining fight that every all time great ( TOP TOP SHELF) has

01-03 would have been a good time for for him to step up, he was in his prime at this time, he won WBOGUS in 97 and didn't fight the other belt holders till 05, the guy cherry picked, he could have stepped alot earlier in his career he waited till it was safe.

Think about it....

if calzaghe came over before tarver I to fight roy.... he was still 4 fights away from jeff lacy.... basically he was still getting into prime calzaghe form

and

if calzghe came over before jermain taylor I to fight bhop... he was still 2 fights away from jeff lacy... once again he was still a couple fights from being in prime format

its just amazing to think about and now that i think about it ... it doesnt surprise me that calzaghe's management waited till the perfect time to come to america and make these fights happen.. I DOUBT that waiting till roy & bhop were over the hill were in their minds... but the opprotunities presented themselves and calz's managment rolled the dice and it paid off....

cause god knows that if calz came over before bhop & roy started going down hill... the results would have been ALOT !! different

timing is an amazing thing isnt it!
