Barring Wlad K, is there a single heavyweight today better than the 15-0 Tim Witherspoon who gave Larry Holmes fits in 1983? Do any of them jab, work the body or throw combinations like Spoon? If so who and explain why.

No one has any answers or replies to this thread? Where are all the boxing experts on this forum?

witherspoon was on the whole a waster, but maybe he was motivated back then, he was very sharp in the holmes fight.

haye might have a chance to ko him, i think he has a massive advantage, the fact he had 15 rounders, boxing has changed alot since the early 80's and spoon would tell you that himself, bigger/better gloves (worse if you like ko's) shorter fights, more holding because the refs let fighters get away with it, better refs who stop fights early if a guy is in trouble, and last but not least american fighters wont get a rub of the green like they used to, the mecca of hw boxing is germany.

Spoon didnt have a great jab imo, he had good mechanics & form but it wasnt the best weapon in his arsenal. He wasnt a great combination puncher either, though he did have nice variety & switched his attack well.

Tim was very, very old school stylewise, you simply dont see current fighters (especially HWs) with the same defensive techniques that he learned. There certainly arent any modern HW who used the right hand like Spoon could, unorthodox but powerful & with sneaky timing, he could it throw straight down the pipe or overhand.

At his best, Spoon was very durable & tough, with good defence & solid power. He matched up well with Holmes but imo looked better against Page & Bonecrusher (the 1st time).

I think Spoon would do rather well in todays HW division & would have a lot of success against the tall, orthodox Eastern Euro's who like to work behind & jab & cant fight on the inside.

    Nice post.

  7. Terrible Tim beat Larry IMO.

Didn't seem to be to focused in his career though, had the talent to go a lot further.

    Haye would give him problems.

Helenius, Pulev might be but are yet unproven at that level.

Helenius has decent hand speed and throws nice combos.

I think Don King ruined any desire Tim had because I agree he certainly could have gone further given his talent.

I like Helenius and he may turn into a great fighter. My biggest problem with heavyweights today is their lack of commitment to the body attack. It benefits a fighters game in every way, I just don't understand why they won't use it anymore.

helenius is a good fighter, he looked **** against chisora though, styles make fights, i think his right uppercut is nice.

  11. Didn't he injure his right hand in the 2nd round.

Hurt Chisora early on, but could not live with the pace Chisora set. Needs to pick that conditioning up and improve his inside game.

  12. Chisora hammered Helenius to the body.

Though not as a heavyweight, Haye used great body punching to slow Mormeck down and stop him.

He'd beat him easily & make SNV look clueless, big right hands over the top & superior work on the inside.

I wouldnt be suprised if he knocked him out, its a great matchup for Spoon, other than Don King being in SNV's corner.

  14. I remember Tim as one of the first boxers I knew about. Witherspoon, Tyson, Bonecrusher Smith, Spinks and for some reason Tony Tubs, Me and my school friends use to have boxing fights in the playground and pretend to be one of them.

Good points. There are some guys who still go to the body, I'm talking more as the division as a whole though.
