Bruno's problems were always stamina based , and in many ways setting a pace he could sustain at top level.. Frank was in a slight lead against Tim, and was leading by a streak against Smith...... But i do also think, Greg Page and Tony Tucker would have battered Frank in the same circumstances.......
Stamina was an issue, but if Bruno could dictate the pace, as he did in arguably his best performance (against Aussie Joe), he could overcome that issue. I think Bruno's main problem was he was too powerful for his own good. I know that sounds mad but Bruno had that clubbing strength power rather than a timing power (like for instance, Tyson), and unfortunately that meant when Bruno fought them learning fights against the journeymen rated 15 to 40, he was flattening them early rather than getting eight/ten rounds under his belt. This caused issues when he fought a top five fighter, who could stand up to his power, as sooner or later Bruno's lack of ring-generalship cost him.....
Awesome point. The early fights are so important to molding fighters and blasting guys out in 2 rounds doesn't always prepare you for what's down the road :good
Very true, but management, match making and training too, wasnt designed to develop him as a fighter/boxer. Oh and Bruno could have beat both Smith and Witherspoon in rematches
The one night poignantly it did nearly all come together for him was in Cardiff against Lewis when he was making Lennox look out of sorts with the jab of all punches.. He made one or two small errors later in the fight and it became his demise on the night... He zigged , when he shoulda zagged so to speak..
I think two factors contributed to Franks Losses to Bonecrusher and Witherspoon, Like Mac Foster before him against Quarry, All those easy Ko's did not sufficients prepare him for opporsition that would absorb his shots and fire back, Frank was physically very imposing and did hit very hard, the 3rd raters were beaten before the first bell in most instances, perhaps the near Hic-Cup against Jumbo Cummings caused some concern, and perhaps Bonecrushers determination under-rated Also Frank, in his world title fights did have the burden of the hopes and asperations of a whole nation weighting heavily on his shoulders, People like Bonecrusher and Witherspoon were essentially just fighting for themselves and their families, Bruno with the hopes of the nation i think burned an awful lot of nervous energy He looked scuplted like a greek statue whereas witherspoon seemed to be in appalling shape, but Terrible Tim could relax in the Ring - Bruno couldnt.
Actually, it's very hard to say what errors Bruno did make against Lewis, other than failing to hold on properly when he was hurt or take a knee. That left-hook came out of nowhere while Lewis seemed to have frozen and Bruno, with his eyes slowen and his slow reflexes, couldn't have possibly evaded or blocked it.
