"Witherspoon-Tubbs" WBA title in '86 / HBO..

    Fellas,

    I also have the 1984 WBC title fight with defending chump Timmy Spoon going against # 1 pretender Pinklon "Stinklon" Thomas on HBO back in the summer of 1984 on HBO........... At the time, BOTH fighters were hot, and the event had pre-fight intensity added to the show.........

    Christ, the fight provided no real fireworks or intensity at all....... Aside from seeing Thomas capture his goal and winning a title, the fight was dull--mainly due to Spoon's whining about being thumbed and being lackluster in his attack during his first defense....... Thomas was the guy doing the most work by applying pressure and jabbing Tim Spoon silly over 12 rds..... Still, a "Ho-Hum" title fight that seemingly got boring after the 6th round........ Thomas won on my card 7 to 5 in rds over the course of 12...... Hell, maybe even 8 to 4 over Spoon........ Spoon stunk in the summer of '84.......

    Britain was sooo gutted when Witherspoon won, we knew that our Frank needed Tubbs in the other corner that July. Of course now a days he would of been, as the fight you of gone down as a No Decision...

    Bruno stopping stopping an out shape TNT in July at Wembley...

    That is rather saddening. Because, most of our general public didn't even know who Tim Witherspoon or Frank Bruno were, and could care less....

    Actually, Spoon was soft and flabby at 233 for the hard as a rock Bruno in London back in '86.......... Bruno did well early on, but faded after round 9....... Come the 11th and 12th rds, Bruno was simply getting his arse kicked bad........... Bruno had to be carried back to his corner...... He was done like a plate of Fish & Chips........... Spoon roared back to score the KO...

    What a disgraceful era. Throw in Page and Bey for the fat, Dokes, Thomas and Cooney for the drugs. Any one of these guys really could have made himself a good rival for Holmes.

    Well, for being a short, fat & dumpy kind of guy, Dave Bey was actually pretty good for 5 or 6 rds against top-notch opponents.......... Bey gave Holmes a good tussle until the 5th round in 1985 on HBO........ Then Holmes' vast skill and ring generalship took control to hammer and TKO Bey in the 10th...........

    I saw Bey sparring with Larry Holmes later in '92 as Holmes was preparing to fight Holy on PPV in Vegas......

    Remember Renaldo "Mister" Snipes of the 80s?????? Snipes was a favorite of mine while I was in high school from '81 to 1985, but Snipes could NEVER win the BIG fight if his career depended on it.............. Snipes' biggest wins were over a slobbish E.M. Muhammad in 1981 and against a bored Trevor Berbick a year or so later on national TV........ Snipes got a draw with Scotty Frank and a friggin' gift decision over Gerrie Coetzee......... Again, I liked Snipes, but his skills sucked long pool stick...........

    He was Jorge Luis Gonzalez's claim to fame before he got raped by Riddick Bowe. Snipes wasnt a bad fighter really.

    Snipes was one of the better contenders of the early 80's.

    He gave a young but green Spoon a very close fight as well as nearly stopping Larry Holmes. He's a bit under rated.

    I know I was there; but hindsight shows it probably to be his best win (the Holmes loss being his best performance); by late 86, Witherspoon was not interested, and he had not bothered to train properly for the supposed Tubbs rematch, and with the late switch of opponent, he was buggered.

    It sums Terrible Tim up, that he loses inside 90 seconds to an opponent he had easily outpointed 18 months previous, knowing a win gets him his biggest fight and pay day ever.

    And yet he was prepared to put his career basically on hold to fight DKP over £900,000. If he fought Tyson, he easily made that...

    The Snipes fight showed Gonzales had not got what it took, he was bad as could of been beating a fringe contender fairly easy, but in an awful, awful, boring fight.

    Thank fan-man for the main event!

    Im suprised Gonzalez continued his career after the monumental amount of sh*t talking he did before the Bowe fight only to get destroyed. You would think he would have moved to outter Mongolia after.
