Agreed. It's the repercussions of this stuff that's the problem. Those casino's stopped those contracts overnight. The other big problem were those exclusive HBO and Showtime deals with certain fighters. They'd protect their interest to the degree that the matches were not competitive and the casual boxing fan left. And all that happens is the guys in charge get fired.
Then again, if they had kept Gonzalez as a gravy train and matched him with another string of 15 or 20 has-beens and tomato cans instead of having him fight Bowe he might have picked up a "world title", maybe a "big win" over a similarly manufactured heavyweight, made a load of money for everyone concerned and be rated as one of the good contenders/titlists of the 1990s. Gonzalez' pro career also shows how "amateur background" and "amateur credentials" and "amateur results" dont necessarily have much bearing at all on results, accomplishments and the skills needed in the pros.
Well, them "3" KO losses to "Bowe, Spoon & Grant" ruined Gonzalez and all his hype surrounding him....... Gonzalez got KTFO pretty bad by them dudes......... BUT! I saw Gonzalez make a brief comeback in 2000 with a quick KO over faded Alex Stewart on Fox Sports..... Then all of a sudden, Gonzalez vanished from the scene..... I haven't seen Gonzalez in yrs and I have no idea where he hides today..... Someone speculated he was in Finland....... WTF is Gonzo doing there??? MR.BILL
I knew Gonzalez was an over-hyped con job when I saw Gonzalez stink the joint out against Snipes in Vegas back in '93 on PPV.......... MR.BILL
Plus, I believe it is on my HBO recording from 1995, but prior to Jorge L. Gonzo fighting Bowe at the MGM, team Gonzo was pissed at something and threatened NOT to enter the ring and fight unless some **** was resolved rather quickly....... I cannot recall what the hell the fuss was all about........ Anyone remember this scene??? MR.BILL
Gonzalez wasn't really worth anything as a pro. He was no bum though with wins over Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis, Tyrell Biggs and Teofilo Stevenson (or so he claims) in the amateurs.
Just for the record, this here Jan. 2012 marks the 26th anniversary of "Spoon-Tubbs" down in Georgia via HBO....... Holmes and Spinks were ringside...... I have the '86 video tucked away..... :deal NOTE: I also got this classic stand-up routine with Buddy Hackett from Atlantic City on the same video..... Comedy classic....... MR.BILL:hat
Gonzalez was exposed terribly against Bowe, and had about 5 rounds of good punch resistance brutally beaten out of him for good. He also quit when hurt against Ross Purrity after the Witherspoon fight.
Is it true that he deliberately held back on stopping Snipes until late, or did he just flat out suck?
