I hadn't seen this fight in a few years and thought back to it the other day and looked it up. A classic that is overlooked far too often. Enjoy:

I thought Spoon won as well. But Mercer finally got a break after losing to Holyfield and Lewis. This was Tim's last hurrah and he never recovered.

I did a thread on this last year and its here in the archives...... Mercer & Spoon fought a great fight over 10 rds... I had it 5-4-1 for Spoon..... BUT! The judges were nice to Mercer back in Dec. 1996....

Spoon bounced back with a 1997 blow-out over Levi Billups, but that was the true end of his mid-90s comeback run...... Soon after Tim Spoon dusted Billups, his career dived and he ended up finishing pretty ugly around 2003.... Spoon's ugly showing against Louis Savarese was the icing on the cake....

If Terrible Tim was a little younger he would have done it, both guys fought hard because it was do or die....Had Witherspon edging it if I remember right.
Funny that you put this up as I was gonna watch this again the other day but watched the Barrett fight insted.

Spoon was pretty good in the 90's and sort of isolated out of the title picture. This was his chance.

Mercer never really capitalized on his generous dec. over Spoon in 1996.... The real big fights seemed to evade him in the late 1990s and Mercer ended up getting butchered by Wlad K. on HBO in 2002......

what a great fight! In england we got the bowe v golota fight but not this classic, thanks for posting it. I had mercer 2 rounds up, he faded at the end but banked so many of the early rounds. mercer kind knew he lost but as he said at the end he was singing the same song in his last two fights that he felt he won. hard scrap.

These were actually the two best heavyweights on that bill that night, IMO.

Shame Mercer's career just petered out after that, and 'spoon's went to **** in a hurry.
