Of course his made a career of his name. When he was winning the Lonsdale Commenwealth EBU and WBC he did that off Hattons own back right? What a pathetic statement.
I think to suggest that Witter has made his career off Hatton's back is totally ridiculous. After all, there are only two men in there, and the best one is usually victorious (unless you are fighting in Germany!). However, it would be fair to say that Witter has got most of his PUBLICITY either from Hatton, Hatton's fights or in some way connected to Hatton. i.e. calling him out constantly, dissing his performances against various opponents, and almost (not quite IMO) gloating after the Mayweather defeat. One does wonder, whether Witter will look back on his career and wonder what might have been? Winning the WBC title is a great achievement, but the fact that he has stalked Hatton constantly for near on a decade (holding up his career IMO) and the fact that he has never really won over the fans or media would surely grate him. Say what you want about Ricky Hatton - the fact is that he has made British people talk about boxing again, rather than just bloody football! Prior to his achievements, most non-Boxing fan would purely say: When are Frank or Lennox fighting next - not realising that Bruno had been retired for yonks and Lennox had just given the game up! Joe Calzaghe did his bit, but until recently hasn't shown the great public persona - maybe that is down to Frank Warren, i'm not sure. Back to topic - for Witter to suggest he KO's Hatton in five is daft. Enough said.
This i do agree with. His career although hampered by FW could have been better if he was more active. He doesnt fight that often has very little mileage and the opportunitys have been slim for him although he has certainly capitalised on them. I just wish he was more busy.
You also wonder whether Witter will look back on many opportunities, and regret not taking them as well as he could have. He won all bar one of them, but hardly sold himself to the media and the public, who want action, KO's and entertainment. Ricky Hatton isn't often involved in **** fights - Urango, Vilches and a couple more excepted, but the Tszyu fight was a thriller, Maussa wasn't that bad, Collazo was a good one (even though performance wasn't great), Castillo was a good fight throughout (especially the third round and the fourth round KO) and Mayweather was five rounds of even fighting, before five rounds of masterclass from Floyd. Compare that to Witter - who has stunk out a fair few arenas in his time.
I agree, he did well in taking Zab the distance at short notice(in an admittedly poor fight) and then totally failed to take advantage of the situation.
Ive always thought that after the title bout against Judah he should have been more active in the ring, buliding on his name. I never believe that fighters should start back at step 1 unless they have completly lost their way.
I havent seen the fight to be honest - did he come out throwing bombs in last round as guys usually do when they know their losing?
I think the manner he took Judah the full 12 rounds is the reason nobody wants him now. If he'd got KO'd in an exciting fight, I think that would have been a better result for his career.
really? and how exacty did Hatton help Witter win the titles and fights he has? Hatton himself made the same claim as you, and it's indicative of Hatton's arrogant and self-important nature. Utter nonsense. more and more people are opening their eyes to Hatton's bollocks, and who the real top 140lb UK fighter is.
Ive always rated Witter, but I wouldnt underate a on-form Hatton. I dont rate his jab, I think my Aunts have a better understanding of the punch.
