I'm not saying he's the greatest fighter by any means, it's just his attitude to the sport that impresses me. In the ring, he doesn't avoid anyone. He called out the people who beat him for years, he's chosen to fight southpaws, an obvious weakness in his game, and if he has one failure as a fighter, it's his chin - but he's never looked to avoid big punchers. I think that says a lot about him. Sadly, there aren't many fighters who choose to overcome obstacles like Klitschko does. Mainly though, look at what he does outside the ring. He brings so much respect to the sport. Whether it's his gracious comments towards his opponent, his friendly, approachable attitude with the press or his vast amount of charity work. He doesn't spend his money on flashy jewellry or feeding his fat entourage. He tries to make the world a better place, which I think we can all appreciate. Wlad is the definition of a true champion. One of the greatest ever, in my opinion.
Good post, both Klitschko brothers are like that. They come 110% for every fight, don't take anyone lightly and will fight anyone available. True sportsmen and role models.
I like Big Klit far more b/c he's talkin some serious bs about his upcoming opponents - Wlad said lately that the hw division needs good trashtalkers but when it comes to this asset, Wlad is clearly just a journeyman...he's just to nice and that what makes the build-up to his fights lame and uneventful - to entertain with skills is one thing but to be the alround superstar (like Ali) is far from that...
I agree with these sentiments about the Klitschko brothers. I can't figure out why they seem to catch so much grief from a lot of boxing fans.
Tremendously well said Jack, the Klitschkos and a few other class champs personify and exemplify humanity at it's best.
Much of it stems back to Lennox Lewis. There was a lot of tension between sides for quite some time before Lewis vs V. Klitschko and when the fight finally did happen it only made things worse. See the classic Radar vs Widdow threads if they still exist.
I think a lot bad mouthing of the Klitschkos in the media by the likes of King, Austin, Toney, Atlas, Kellerman, Rahman, Sugar saying Carnera beats Wlad, Jones saying he could beat Klitschkos, etc etc, all this adds up, a lot of people believe it. And it has created a negative stigma about their actual abilities and credibility. The same thing happened to Lennox Lewis, from 1992-finally the Tyson fight, most people thought Lewis was just another British stiff. But like Lewis, the Klitschko's have just about cleaned out the division of all the misfits, and proven all the naysayers grossly wrong.
would have to agree. they have their bad poits with shitty fight competition, not their fault, but they are always in shape and are 100% professional
I respect and like Lewis and I am glad he made it into the Hall of Fame. A true champion would have granted Vitaly a rematch though. I also like the Klitchko's. Everyone complains about Wvlad's chin but show me one boxer that can take a punch straight on the chin from another boxer who is 220+ pounds and not go down. Wvlad's skill in the ring is amazing and he (and his brother) do not get the respect they deserve. There is not one boxer in the HW division that can touch either of them. Period. People think Ali is the greatest? His win over Liston (and Liston's untimely death afterward) is totally questionable. Not to mention is KO % and win rate is lower than many other great HW boxers. Ali is "the greatest" because of his mouth and personality, not because of his record.
Yeah. I just hope he holds the belt for awhile until we see the next Superstar Heavyweight. Always wanted to see what a fit Toney would look like vs Wlad.
Very well said, Jack. Those are the same reasons I find it impossible not to root for him and what made me a fan. And, odd as it is, some of those qualities are probably the very reasons he isn't more well known here. The general public here loves a heavyweight with two things- a punch and a mouth. A rough edge doesn't hurt, either. I think that's why some people just prefer Vitali; Wlad comes off to the critics I've talked to as simply too nice and respectful to be a truly great fighter, whereas Vitali wears his mean streak on his sleeves and won't bother to hide them. I don't buy the bit about Wlad myself, but I can see where others are coming from. Vitali's a classy guy too, but if he gets pissed, you'll know it and if you're the guy who made him pissed, you usually won't like the outcome.
Wlad is a good champion, but far from great. His last couple matches were anything but stellar performances. Against Iggy he looked scared to throw his big right hand, for fear of being countered on his extremely weak chin, and failed to impress on the big stage, and boxing fans lashed out after the fight, showering him with boo's. His fight against a glorified journeyman in Thompson was almost as bad, if not for a late round knockout. I feel Wlad is a pretty good guy outside the ring, but inside the ring he looks scared at times, and reluctant to go punch for punch with his oppenents, and when the going gets tough he finds himself on his back 9 times out of 10, his brother on the other hand is tough as nails, and has proven himself to be the better fighter, by destroying a prime Sam Peter, something Wlad couldnt do 3 years ago when he had the chance.
Wladimir's a very good champion, and he has fought all comers and has come closer than anyone to cleaning out the HW division, he's great for the sport.
Good post, mate! Well spoken! Wlad is a classy human being outside the ring. Some years ago I watched him take part in a political discussion on tv.Damn! Whatever he said and stated made more sense than whatever a German politician- who also attended that political talk show -uttered. He is a very smart, intelligent, and likeable human being who doesnt behave like a ridiculous clown covered with jewels constantly trying to belittle his opponents. He is really great for our beloved sport.A true role model!
