Tyson lost to every ATG he's faced, Wlad may not have fought any ATGs but his longetivity and dominane deserves more credit than Tyson's any success.
Tyson was not top 10 in 2000s. And Mayweather is not a HW, he may have better resume but not comperable.
Wlad's good, but the problem is he was born in a weak era. If he was fighting the top dogs in the 90's he would of gone down as a great, but instead he's going to be regarded as the best of a weak era. The best in the late 90's was Lewis, and he didn't fight him. It wasn't Wlad's fault, but that's the fact. In the 00's, the best regarded boxer was Vitali and Wlad couldn't obviously fight him. Those two fights were the only chance he had for defining fights.
He didn't come close to "cleaning out" the previous era. He lost to each of one of the best of the previous era (Sanders), an average of the previous era (Brewster), and a journeyman of the previous era (Purrity). Huge Wladimir fan here but he did not clean it out nor come close to doing so.
As much as I love Tyson, his resume isn't all that great either. He fought about 30 bums (albeit within a span of about 2 years) before facing Berbick in his one and only defence of the title, followed by Bonecrusher Smith (again, one and only defence). Tony Tucker, same story with a vacant title. These guys were one-time champs who went on to become journeymen. They aren't better than the average Wlad opponent. Larry Holmes was almost 40 when Mike faced him and coming off two consecutive losses. Holyfield was a cruiserweight and stopped Tyson. The only ATG he faced, Lennox Lewis, easily stopped him. Come to think about it, Wlad has a better resume and faced better opponents.
Amazing longevity. He's been 15 years in the Top10. Only great fighters like Ali, Louis and Foreman (because of the 10 year hiatus) can say they lasted so long. Wlad has virtually beaten guys from 2 or 3 generations. He's undefeated streak is 10.5 years. No other heavyweight had a longer unbeaten streak during his prime.
to those who can't deal with Wlad's longevity, don't worry, a couple of years and he'll retire, afterwhich you will be crying that the HW division is in even worse shape because there will be 4 B-level titleholders with each one changing inside a year, two tops
