It's like Fred Flintstone vs Earl Anthony and Fred has a bowling ball made in Bedrock with a hand chisel and the modern guy has a machine crafted smooth polished orb of rolling perfection.

While these comparatives are just so impossible ... you have a good point .. athletes react to what their opponent is doing. This may be boxing but it should also be viewed as a fight. You can't have one guy on his bike and back foot who keeps his back always touching the ropes moving from corner to corner sticking out a jab while the other guy stands impassively in the middle of the ring watching, hoping, and waiting for the other guy to come engage him in the center. Viewed this way there are no landed punches because of the rigidness of the interpretation. Either fighters from this early era actually move quicker than the film technology of the time can accurately represent in frames per second or half of my friends in the gym could get in a time machine and take on twenty greats in the same night one after the next and beat the **** out of them. I have to think that some of the very best from the past weren't simply akin to Fred's misshapen bowling ball as there still hasn't been a leap to having more than two arms and legs or an extra head or anything. There has to have been some benefit from fighting 80 or 100+ fights over twenty years or so that translates into some kind of discernible prowess and adaptable man-to-man combat development.

Perhaps the best or one of the most distinguished from this era could live with a guy who undoubtedly isn't the best large sized athlete on the planet today - merely one of the largest and in condition in a sport experiencing a long long downtrend due to trends in the US specifically and a fighter clearly imperfect and athletically proven only against "C" level opposition and even then routed or given a rough go by some really unimpressive unexceptional comp.
