These are the best HW’s of today, in no specific order:

    Olexsandr Usyk
    Agit Kabayel
    Tyson Fury
    Fabio Wardley
    Joseph Parker
    Filip Hgrovic
    Zhilei Zhang

We can add Anthony Joshua if he comes back.

We can add Deontay Wilder if he proves that he’s not shot.

We can add Moses Itauma if he keeps progressing.

There’s also other good fighters in the top 15-20.

But those mentioned are the best currently.

I don’t think I’ve missed anyone out there.

If I have, you can correct me.

Below were the best HW’s who were around in the mid 1970’s:

    Muhammad Ali
    Joe Frazier
    George Foreman
    Ron Lyle
    Jerry Quarry
    Jimmy Ellis
    Ken Norton
    Jimmy Young
    Joe Bugner
    Ernie Shavers
    Larry Holmes

So have we really seen any great evolution within the last 50 years??

Not gonna lie, it's kind of funny and quite frankly pathetic, to see posters wasting their time, giving these fantastic, in depth, breakdowns debating people who clearly have no interest in being objective.

Depends. I mostly respond whilst stretching, during a daily hike or whilst my kid's training.

The thing is, if you know better and you allow lies to rule, are you not complicit in the lies?

Some new person to the sport will at least have a balanced view when they're presented with something other than just zero losses, 6 weight champion, the best ever with less than 50 fights etc. Don't we owe it to the next ones up to expand their framework of assessing the sport like those before us did when we fanboy'd the shiniest new toy or used shallow criteria that doesn't stand up to historical scrutiny?

Or you could be some stubborn boomer and not realize there are more advantages today than there was then. Boxing is one of the very few sports where the weight of the individual is so critical that they have marked off different classes for each range. Compound that with boxing being the most physical sport because you are getting punched in the face, body, etc. But we want to pretend that a massive guy like Wladimir Klitschko who would dwarf over Muhammad Ali and who has fought more than Ali in both the amateurs and pros and has incredible talent, speed, power, etc. would lose to him. Wlad has fought many more contenders with various strategies and strengths. The sad thing about these hypothetical match-ups is that they are fantasy and they don't even have a little taste of reality. I would love to see your face if these two actually would walk in the ring together and you can see that size disparity.

Additionally, I hate when some of these professional athletes or people to claim they are so knowledgeable about a sport, but can't get basic stuff right or constantly pick the incorrect team / person to win. They want to say well this person never boxed or played football professionally or coached they should have no opinion, but the person can arguably be more knowledgeable than the supposed "pro".

John will be around soon to give you a spanking.

    But first, I’ll reply.

Now I gave you the benefit of the doubt.

I tried to converse with you.

But all you are is an ignorant casual.

    Your posts are cringeworthy.

    Why?

Because your knowledge is so limited.

    Yes, boxers today have advantages.

    But guess what?

Boxers back then also had many advantages over today’s guys too.

Wlad would not have dwarfed Ali, genius.

Ali was a guy of 6’3.

Ali wasn’t in any way a small HW.

Ali could absolutely have beaten Wlad. 100%

It’s just that you haven’t got the knowledge to appreciate the stylistic match up, as well as the psychological aspect.

Ali could have beaten any HW in history.

And many HW’s of Ali’s size, have caused issues to Wlad, Lewis and every other SHW.

We’ve also literally recently seen Usyk beat Fury, Dubois and AJ x 2.

A guy of Ali’s EXACT size beating THREE SHW’s.

And like Ali, he beat them all on mobility, and not on size, strength and power.

    How odd??

Your best course of action right now, is to go away and study the sport.

Because the more you post, the more you embarrass and expose yourself.

I’ve already done a comparison for you yesterday

And if you think that today’s guys are on another level to the guys that I’ve listed, then you need to delete your account.

    You are very ignorant.

More bad news for you I’m afraid.

    What did you say?

That Wlad would have dwarfed Ali?

Ali was was 6’3, with a 78” reach.

    Dwarfed him??

Well check out these FOUR opponents of Wlad’s:

    Lamon Brewster

    Corrie Sanders

    Ross Puritty

    Samuel Peter

    Lemon Brewster - 6’2, with a 77” reach

    Corrie Sanders - 6’4, with a 77” reach

    Ross Puritty - 6’3, with a 80” reach

    Samuel Peter - 6’2, with a 77” reach

FOUR NON ELITE fighters of a SIMILAR size.

    The results?

    THREE overall LOSSES.

THREE KNOCKDOWNS in the fight that he won.

    But Wlad dwarfed them, right??

Yeah, I wish that we could have seen your face, when you saw the size disparity in those match ups.

    It would have been priceless.

Only you weren’t watching back then.

The one in denial here is you. You're fawning over a guy because he's big and has shiny muscles - a real size queen. You're banging on about how important size is when a cruiserweight moved up and has dominated the big guys in recent years..........including the guy that Schooled yo boy Wladdy!!!!!!!

You labelled Wlad "A monster that puts on boxing gloves." for gods sake. You claimed he was 270 pounds when he fought Fury, he wasn't close. You're size mad.

Wlad a monster yet he was pole axed by three unrated fighters - some monster lol! Two of them weighed less than 227 pounds! He was 26/27 years old. Two whooping when he had 40 fights under his belt! Wait, i bet he was green.

Despite this you've got the audacity to bag Ali banging on about his performance against Doug Jones in his 18th fight!!!! Wladdy was getting knocked the **** out twice after he had more than double that amount of fights...when he was years older! He was axed in his 25th fight as well yet here you are saying Ali can't beat big Wladdy cause of Doug Jones in his 18th fight.

The bias and denial reeks. Two completely different sets of standards. But hey, Wladdy has big shiny muscles pal. That'll get the job done.

I have NO idea where that is coming from but i actually agree. It's your best paragraph in the bloody thread - well done.

Wow. I seemed to have triggered you in some way lol. Calm down chap.

Lemon Brewster - 6’2, with a 77” reach ----> Wlad put the belt to a** to Lamon. I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist, but there are crazier stories than Wlad getting drugged in boxing. That was not a normal fatigued boxer (after only 5 rounds). The Puritty fight was 11 and he threw probably double that many punches in that fight. Is CHEF still on this forum because I'd like to hear his thoughts.

Corrie Sanders - 6’4, with a 77” reach ------> Got blitzed by a big, fast southpaw that other contenders had a problem with. If Wlad fought like he did in the later half of his career he probably would have won. Sanders was a part-time fighter with some skills, but since he didn't take the sport that serious would have probably also gassed out in the later rounds.

Ross Puritty - 6’3, with a 80” reach -----> Wlad put the belt to a** to Ross. I've already explained this fight.

Samuel Peter - 6’2, with a 77” reach ----> Wlad put the belt to a** to Peter. You wanna try to throw this fight in here? Peter used rabbit punching and was an undefeated prospect who was built like a tank and had scary knockouts, but still got beat on badly.

The point of this thread was to point out that Wlad has the worst style for Ali. I believe that and so do others. You are bringing up guys that beat or gave Wlad some trouble, but they are all big punchers - Ali was not. Wlad has(d) the record (compubox) for most jabs thrown (and landed I think) in a HW fight against David Bostice. Meaning, he throws a slightly longer, very fast, powerful jab often against Ali (who is a jabber). I think Ali would have problems from this plus the fact that Wlad does a very good job of hooking off the jab which Ali has had issues with left hooks. All mixed in with one of the hardest, straightest, fast right hands. Ali is going to have serious problems. Maybe he wins, but it will probably not be an easy night for him. There's no mob to help him, laying on the ropes isn't going to help him. What's Ali do? Run around the ring and hope Wlad tires himself? Didn't David Haye try that? With Haye it was a legit plan because he could bang and he had the speed. So I ask again - what does Ali do to win this fight?

    Again, you're very ignorant.

Every one of your points have been absolutely decimated.

You asked for a comparison, I gave you the comparison.

    Where's you answer?

    Nowhere.

I actually pity your lack of knowledge, and for you believing that everything today is better, and that no fighters from the 70's were superior.

Regarding your little analysis above, it doesn't matter.

Yes, I know that they were different stylistic match ups than Ali.

However, you said that you'd like to see JT's face if they'd have fought, as Wlad would have dwarfed him.

Yet he lost to 3 non elite level fighters, who he supposedly dwarfed.

And so what if they had power??

Wlad was a hugely powerful SHW, who according to you, is the 3rd best HW who's ever fought.

    Ha!

Now you might want to rethink your absurd ranking.

Now he was never rematching Sanders. He had to send in his big brother.

Peter was a crude B-C level guy, who was grossly out of shape.

Now I have never said that Ali would have had an easy night. But you are scoffing at his chances, whilst giving examples of guys who had no similarities to Wlad.

When he was still great, Ali greatly struggled with guys like Frazier, who could fight him up close, on the inside. A guy who was much smaller and faster than Wlad.

The beauty of the sport, is that Frazier's style was Ali's kryptonite, Frazier was then manhandled easily by George, but then George ended up losing to Ali.

    So how did that happen??

Again, Ali wasn't small. He was 6'3, with a 78' reach. And although he didn't have the power of a guy like Sanders, he had more speed. More mobility. He had lightening hands. Extremely quick feet. And great upper body movement, with great reflexes and a highly unorthadox style.

So in simple terms, he was very hard to read. Hard to predict. And with his size and great speed, he could have beaten Wlad to the punch. He could have set traps for him. Feinted him out of position, to make him commit. Then he could have countered him.

IMHO, a younger Wlad would have been more dangerous to Ali. He was young and more vulnerable, but a lot more offensive minded and aggressive. The older, ultra cautious Wlad would have been an easier puzzle to solve for Ali.

Now the main issue with you, is that you don't just think that Wlad would have been favoured. The issue is, you think that it's both laughable and nostalgic for people to believe that Ali would have won.

Again, let's look at the Tyson Fury fight.

Yes, Tyson was bigger than Ali. But again, he had beaten nobody elite, and he had no real firepower to have bothered Wlad.

Yet Wlad would not fight him aggressively. He bought every feint. He would not commit to his jab and his power punchers, and Tyson's mobility gave him huge, huge, issues.

Now it should be obvious to you, that although Ali was smaller than Tyson, that his great mobility, would also have greatly bothered Wlad.

Wlad never saw anybody in his career with Ali's mobility.

Haye was the same size, with great power, but he didn't possess Ali's speed and overall mobility.

Again, as JT has pointed out, a guy of Ali's exact size, has beaten Tyson Fury twice, on his great mobility.

So that is your absolute proof, that a guy of Ali's size, also with limited power, can beat a modern day, elite level SHW.

    He's beaten 3 of them.

    Twice each.

That's SIX wins over 3 SHW's. Guys who you claim are superior to the guys from Ali's era.

Now how do you explain this??

A guy of Ali's exact same size, with limited power, being able to beat modern day, elite level SHW's, one of who beat Wlad himself??

Finally, you haven't taken into account the psychological aspect of things.

Now Tyson did a complete psyche job on Wlad. Both inside and outside of the ring.

Yet nobody could psyche out guys like Ali could.

All things considered, Ali would have had a very realistic chance of beating Wlad.

    Just like Usyk would have.

Now if you can't see this, you really need to gain some much needed knowledge before continuing.

    It has no relevance whatsoever.

However, whilst he's brought this up, completely off topic, I'd like to ask him if he's British/English, considering that he believes that Joe Calzaghe is a top 100 fighter of all time.
