Povetkin just ducked his head and bulled inside, misfiring on lunges, smothered himself in Wlad's belt line, got leaned on, often just hugged himself. He closed the distance but was never in position to get any punches off. He was completely ineffective. Typical Wlad as usual just does what he needs to do to secure the win. Great pressure fighters like Tyson and Frazier would use movement as they pressured to make Wlad miss and try to time him over the jab. Marciano would lean low like Povetkin but use feints to sucker Wlad into an opening. Would it work? Wlad is a very intelligent and athletic giant, it would be a tough night's work, but he would certainly have to do more than the occassional check hook and grab to keep these guys at bay. Marciano and Frazier could sustain an effective body attack as well. Calvin Brock had a great deal of success pounding Wlad's body, which took away his clinch game in the early rounds. Povetkin had no body attack, he just kept reaching for the chin, looping punches Wlad can see coming a mile away, allowing him to step inside and smother them, move out of the way, or deflect them with his gloves. I know everyone is dying ot be the next Lamon Brewster or Sandres, but head hunting against Wlad is useless now. You have to attack his body.
Povetkin found his head down by Wlads belt line because Wlad used his elbows to put it there. There are pictures of Wlad completely elevated off the canvas while on Povetkin's back. Your acceptance of his fouling tactics tells me you dont value boxing skills , ring integrity or sportsmanship.
another great post.... your starting to become my new favorite poster in this place... disagree about rocky and smokin joe tho my man...just to small..
And my whole point in another thread is that Povetkin knew exactly what Wlad's tactics would include. You can't bull into Wlad low like he did Huck and not expect to get leaned on. Maybe if he bothered to develop a body attack like Calvin Brock did instead of smothering himself.
Personally I think Wlad is declining. I was not impressed with his performance against Pianeta, he looked a bit uncoordinated and sloppier than usual and the fight with Povetkin only added to my belief that Wlad is declining. But it's hard to say how he'll to against a good/great pressure fighter because he hasn't fought any. Peter is not a pressure fighter he's a slugger who throws bombs from the outside or midrange he doesn't really press and try to get inside like Povetkin. Chagaev was too cautious and didn't really try to apply any pressure and Mormeck was simply too small and too past prime to be effective. Povetkin is without a doubt the best pressure fighter he has fought so far and he did not look good. I don't think Wlad controls range as well as Vitali and may look less dominant against pressure fighters but until he faces a fighter like Chisora or perhaps Arreola we really don't know how he'll cope with pressure other than what we saw with Povetkin.
Thanks, well the great pressure fighters were small though all HW fighters weighed less than, no getting around that. But they were also fighting machines. I like Fraizer and Marciano's chances over heavier, modern swarmers like Tua, who with his lack of movement and punch creating would get shut out as badly as he did against Lewis.
Frazier is physically too weak to handle Wlad's inside hugging and grabbing. Plus Frazier had a soft chin, Wlad would floor him multiple times before this mismatch is over.
So you realy think a clinch is defensive? Only Clinching? whitout blocking or konterboxing? No in my opinion it has nothing to do with defensive! James Toney is a man who had a defensive. Waldi simply **** the queensbury rules and nothing more. Its a shame for boxing when two top fighters show such a terrible performance in a HW-Titel fight. Most of my friends dosn´t watch boxing anymore, because they only know the Klitschko´s at the HW and they find boxing is ****ing boring today. Thats the same guys who´s stand up in the Night to watch Tyson, Holyfield and Lennox in the 80´s & 90´s.
You think Wlad in 60/70s America is going to have a ref to protect him? You are under the impression Wlad has Foreman and Ali like abilities. He has neither. Joe lets off hooks to Wlads head and body faster than anything he's ever seen before. This ins't about who is better at clinching. This is boxing. Last Saturday was a once off disgrace to the sport and fighting like that is not within the rules, therefor don't apply to h2h match ups. Maybe you should take time to understand that.
Klitschko fights are boring because they are not competitive anymore. Still lots of fun boxing from past year or so at HW: Povetkin vs Huck Adamek vs Walker Fury vs Cunningham were all pretty fun. Last entertaining Wlad fight was against Calvin Brock.
Sam Peter almost had him out of there and he fought like Spiderman had shot him with webbs. What do you think Tyson would of done to him? Did yu ever watch 80's Tyson?. Did you ever see the speed of his hands and feet? Wlad would be Spink'd against Mike.
No he doesn't. Frazier looked slow as molasses in the ring vs. Foreman -- who himself was slow. Frazier has no reach, he was physically weak, he had a soft chin. Heck he wouldn't even reach Wlad's chin with his looping punches, please. It is painful to even imagine this mismatch. Put Frazier in a time machine, put him in the ring with Wlad today nad he'd get hugged to death and jabbed to a bloody mess. Sorry it's just the truth. Frazier is a HOF fighter his own right in his own era. He'd have zero chance against modern day super HW champs like Bowe/Lewis or the K brothers.
Tyson would have gotten clinched to death and tired out and stopped. 'Getting Inside' isn't the way to beat Wlad. Neither Wlad or Lennox who were trained by the same guy ever lost to someone that 'got inside'. If you want to say pressure fighters sure I will agree with that 100% but there is a huge difference between being a pressure fighter and someone who strictly seeks to 'get inside'. Lennox like Wlad would clinch, lean, push, throw anyone that got inside on him it just doesn't work. It is a fantasy. The fighters that beat both Lennox and Wlad were not scared to take a punch to land one went right at them and were willing to punch it out with them and not worry about return fire. 'Getting inside' is just going to get you clinched, hugged, leaned on, pushed to death tired out and KOed or losing 120-108 on all 3 judges scorecards.
No need to read anymore. Smith was stronger on the inside than Wlad and had better clinching abilitys. He didn't win a round and got savaged when Tyson broke free. Wlad gets demolished. Don't be a fool.
