Holmes retired in 1986 when Tyson was just starting to collect the belts. He was not part of his era. Maybe when he came back out of retirement he was but not originally. Ali was old as hell when he fought Holmes so no he was not really in Larry's era either. Witherspoon? :roflatsch
The Holmes jab was a thing of beauty. More quick and accurate than Wlad's. Next to Ali, Holmes had the best 1-2 combo and if Wlad's leans back he is susceptible to get hit with that combinaison.
holmes would slice him up and tko him..... look what Lewis did to him and he was 37 years old and past his prime..... anyone picking Vitali are guys that never saw holmes fight in his hay day...while his division was weak, nothing like it is today....he still fought withersppon, bonecrusher smith, weaver, trevor berbick, shavers ( 2 times) spinks (leon and michael) undefeated carl williams, renaldo snipes, gerry cooney, david bey, marvis frazier
Holmes went 13 rounds with Gerry Cooney in his prime. Holmes also had two Hall Of Fame trainers in his training camp and corner for that fight in Ray Arcel and Eddie Futch. It took him 13 rounds to get rid of a Glass Jawed incomplete fighter in Cooney. I do not think it is out of line to say that the Klitschko's especially the Iron Chinned Vitali could hang in there or maybe even beat Holmes.
Vitali could not beat an out of prime,m out of shape LL. Prime Holmes is slightly better than Prime LL. Prime Holmes beats both Klits. Holmes had the best jab and next to Ali the best 1-2 combinaison in the heavyweight division.
A few points: Prime Lennox would smash Larry Holmes. Lennox has the far better resume and fought much better/tougher opposition that can't be debated. Vitali lost to Lennox Lewis because of a cut. You are making it sound like Vitali was KOed. Cuts happen in Boxing and it was a bit of a fluke as Vitali Klitschko has not suffered another cut on his face since that fight. Now before you go crazy Lennox Lewis beat Vitali Klitschko fair and square. I am not saying Lennox did not win the fight. Look at my previous post and the guys Holmes was fighting during his title reign I listed 7 defenses that were complete bums. My posistion still stands it is not out of line for someone to say that Wlad or especially Vitali could hang in there with Larry Holmes.
This fight could go both ways...... both have jabs that rank among the best ever. Wlad is a lot more powerful, but on the other hand, Holmes took a better shot than Wlad so that might even it out a bit. Wlad is definitely a step up from anyone Holmes beat, but the reverse is true also.
My point is that Holmes fought better fighters. Ken Norton and Tim Witerspoon, Mike Weaver are very tough competition. At 40, he also gave prime Holyfield all he could handle.Wlad's competition is weaker. I do not rank LL above Larry Holmes. LL was the heavier puncher but Holmes had the better jab and movement.Prime Holmes does not get crashed by no one, Holmes was very tough and had a good chin.
Holmes jab was very good but Wlad and Lewis are way too big for him to use it effectively on them. It would be like asking a LHW to try and outjab Holmes. Holmes prime was an era when the heavyweghts were not only weak, but were much smaller than today. I think Wlad vs Holmes would be an interesting fight where I'd make Wlad favourite but I think prime Lewis would beat Holmes much more easily.
Holmes would show Wlad what a true jab looks like, & Bomb him out with rights before 5rds. (Prime Holmes goes undefeated in today's HW"s just like he did in the late 70's/early 80's) Very easy.
