Word is out that Wlad Klitschko has started negotiations with WBO champ Sultan Ibragimov on a unification bout to be held at Madison Square Garden in February next year. Any thoughts?
yep. and it's also mentioned at the b oxing s cene website too :good god damn i hope that they come to an agreement. but having negotiations is a good sign. i think sultan's crew know thompson could beat sultan or make he look ordinary. and if that happens it will make three fights in a row where sultan looked average. (briggs, holyfield and then thompson). he'd lose momentum and chances of big money fights. so this is probably what warrior boxing promotions are thinking. and im sure sultan doesn't want to hang around for a long time based on his interviews. i think he'll give it his best in a unification fight though. but that wont be enough.
it's needed for a couple reasons. 1. it offically crowns wladimir the man. unoffically boxing fans know who is no1. but casual fans etc probably don't have a clue. just because you and i know the deal, doesn't mean **** in the wider scheme of things. 2. when someone unfies it creates a center of gravity. sooner or later the other belt holders will be sucked into fighting the guy who holds two belts. why? it's easy for 4 belt holders to bellow they are no1. but when there is 1 man with 2 belts, and two other men with a single belt each, they begin to look less of a champ. and if the unfied champ wins another belt the lone champ with 1 belt will look decidely silly next to the guy with 3 belts. kinda how lucien bute will look like a paper champ once the calzaghe or kessler unfiy 3 belts plus the ring belt. once unfication starts... it doesn't stop til it's finished. 3. it would silence some haters, and also make the bull**** spouted by the other belt holders less. that will be a relief! 4. it establishes the linear champ again. so even if wladimir drops a couple belts soon after collecting them, everyone will know who they must beat to be the real man at heavy. 5. also as much as we fickle fans like to diss fighters (and im fully guilty of this), the belt holders deserve respect. if they were THAT crap or heartless etc. there'd be a good chance they would not have won a belt. therefore sultan will make a healthy challenge to wladimir. he most likely will get KTFO, but at least wladimir isn't fighting an ancient fighter, or fake hyped fighter. sultan is most likely the weakest or second weakest belt holder out there, but he DID earn his belt. .... well, that's my opinion.
Actually.. Ibragimov's got bigger balls than I thought he did if he's actually thinking about taking WALD on.

Wlad has shown interest in coming to meet the winner of the last WBO HWT Title fight in an interview, completely disregarding, at the same time, that there is a WBO/WBA unification bout on the hold, that Sultan cannot definitely put his WBO Championship on the line against one other than Tony Thompson and that the IBF wouldn't sanction such a fight at the present moment. So the word that is out is more given to the realms of pure imagination match-making than to serious negotiations between IBF and WBO counterparts.
