But he already fought a non-mandated challenger. He's gonna do it twice? :bart I don't care for Thompson one bit but if he's the mandatory Sultan has to fight him just like Briggs had to fight Sultan. What's good for the goose...
As far as I know there is no set number of title defenses. Just a timeline. Also as far as I know the proposed bout cannot overlap that yearly obligation. Say if he set the fight with Klitschko for May or June. It'd probably be rejected on the basis that the Thompson fight wouldn't get set until August at the earliest.
That's my understanding, as well. I think they can fight a second voluntary defense if they choose, and they only have the deadline for the mandatory (one year) to be concerned with. Ibragimov is a young enough and healthy enough guy prepare for a fight in February ( four full months) and still have all the way til June to fight Thompson (another full four months). Win win situation for Sultan, if you ask me.
Sultan vs. Wlad sounds good to me. February is enough time for Sultan to get ready. It's not like he's been in any tough fights lately. Briggs and Holyfield's punch output was slightly below non-existent which made for 2 smooth fights.
Wlad vs Valuev will be more interesting. Two giants slugging it out. I wonder who will be the referee? Who is the tallest referee out there?
Klitchko has been sitting on that IBF strap for quite a while. Lately he has not been even talking about unifacation this is a step in the right direction. Lets just hope for the fan boys on this site Wald does a bit better than the last time he faced a left hander that could punch. I don't think I could stand the excuses that would be shure to follow if Klithcko gets stopped again. This time IMO we will see a cautious Klitchko make a big mistake and start out trying to box his way to a decision. But Sultan will be not standing in front of him waiting for that big right hand he will be moving in and out trying to get the akward Klithcko out of position. If Sultan works that long not so durable body of the champ he has a very good chance to open things up upstairs and get that glass chin. If Klitchko uses his right hand and is willing to move forward behind hard shots he will make short work of the left hander if he waits for his chances he will see the canvas. IMO Wald is getting nailed hard early sitting back trying to establish his jab.The good thing for him is Sultan is not as big a puncher as Sanders. What I like about this fight is Klitchko fights harder when he gets nailed hard so even if he has a plan to sit back and take a easy decision Sultan will force him out of it in a hurry. Lets hope for the champions sake he don't fall apart again when his chin gets tested.
This unification fight would be great for the heavies. I think a lot of people are underrating Ibragimov here, he does have good power and Klitschko does have a weak chin. Ibragimov is quick, skilled, durable, good stamina and a good chin. If he can improve his power to fight Wlad, then he will have a decent chance. I can't see him winning a decision over Wlad but he might land a wild bomb and get a tko, as has happened before. The most probable outcome though, is Wlad punishing Iggy throughout the fight and stopping him in the later rounds or getting a majority decision. I'd say it's a 80-20 fight in favor of Wlad. Anyway, I only see Ibragimov taking on this fight if he is guaranteed a major payday that will guarantee him for life. A loss may set him back a great deal.
Valuev would be an easy target for Wlad's bombs. I think Ibragimov has very quick feet and hands for a heavy, and proved he can win matches by boxing instead of slugging. As a speeyd southpaw, Ibragimov has a chance to give Wlad problems. Chagaev is also a southpaw, but he lacks the speed and range that Ibragimov has.
Thompson is alright but I'd have to favor Iggy at this point. The ABC's have put mandatory defenses aside for unification in the past so this IBF/WBO showdown is still a possibility. If the money is right Iggy may just drop the belt for an opportunity at the more prestigous IBF anyway. That's happened before as well.
Another good point. Usually a mandatory doesn't nec. need to be your next fight but it needs to within a certain amount of time.
