That time slot usually gets over a million viewers , so it was the content at the time (Wlad) that caused the disastrous ratings , not a 'sunny Saturday afternoon'... There was no interest there. If it was worth watching people would of made it an agenda to watch , like they did for whatever is usually on.
Why would American boxing fans tune in to see a heavyweight fight these days? They know that no Americans have a chance to win the coveted heavyweight boxing title. They know that boxing is now a global sport. A New Zealander and a Ukraine heavyweight champion fought for the title. No Americans are competitive now that boxing is now a global sport. Tennis is a global sport as is soccer. Americans simply cannot compete at the highest level of sport once they have to compete on a global level. It is what it is.
If there was any truth to this one of the following is also true; -Vlad is stupid and knows nothing about business -RTL nickle and dimed Vlad -All of the above There is a reason why both networks pay different amounts to both boxers. Vlad makes $4M per fight Mayweather makes $32M
Let's be real here, most of america won't care about the heavyweight division until you get an american born fighter that has the whole package like Foreman, Dempsey and Tyson had. People can see through propped up crap fighters with ease, not everybody who watches boxing is an ignorant person unlike what the networks, promoters and managers want people to think.
The Heavyweight division has been a joke since Lennox Lewis retired, the K's are both non - entities.
Wlad made $24 mil , floyd $34mil in 2013. Wlad makes more than 4 per fight. I made over $170k and you got your food stamps.
Germany doesn't think too highly of them either. Look at the contract with RTL for exclusive rights to televise Vlad's next four (4) fights. What is exclusive access to Vlad's next 4 fights worth to RTL? $16M dollars, or $4M per fight. That's about 1/10th (or less) the value that Showtime sees in exclusive access to Mayweather fights.
I keep hearing that "Someone said" that time slot usually gets a million viewers so 486K is just about half the "Usual" view... Lets consider for a moment not the fact that it's a saturday at 5PM but that it's the season that makes this comparison garbage... Fall Schedule... College Football which is wildly more popular than boxing in the US so you can't compare one unpromoted fight to a known fact that College Football Rules the airwaves every saturday Winter through March...NCAA Basketball again much more popular than Boxing in the US so you can't compare those numbers either (March Madness vs 1 Fight?) Now we come to the Spring / Summer...Someone Please tell me how many views the woman's softball game on there next week gets? or the nationwide series (minor league nascar) - I believe Wlad's fight may be comparable to either of these sports, although Nascar has a very large fan base just not sure how many people watch the saturday race But don't tell me there are usually 1 million views and walk away like the fight was a failure, I think half a million views for the heaveyweight champ on free TV is a good thing for boxing, just next time get someone who will help promote the sport rather than denigrate it like that dumb ass Teddy Atlas
Jack Dempsey was born and raised in gruelling poverty. He worked in coal mines for pittance and fought the toughest miners where winning meant getting eggs and some bacon. His tough upbringing impacted his future greatness. Those days are long gone in America of today. The welfare society has slobs watching sports on giant flat screened televisions and eating better than medieval royalty. There will be no heavyweight to challenge Wlad from that kind of cultural depravity.
Vlad's contract deal with RTL is Four fights for $16M. Simple math shows $4M/fight. Vlad made another $8M in product endorsements. In 2013 Mayweather was the world's highest paid athlete with $74M is fight earning, no endorsements. Showtimes contract with mayweather gurantees him $30M fight, plus PPV residues with add at minimum, another $8M to Floyd's total. Son, that's a hell of a difference, and for a damn good business related reason.
DVR usage has no bearing on my comment...please re-read and let me know if you need smaller words to understand that an average viewer base is founded on the fact that much more popular sports are on during that time slot in season. it is now an off season for that time slot so you can't compare...
Thats pretty impressive since mayweather wasnt shown on european TV at all, or Hopkins, or Ward, or Wilder. That could have two reasons: 1. Mayweather, Hopkins and Ward are robotic, useless, boring losers 2. People want to see "their man" fighting. Why is no one in America or Europe watching two worldclass Philipine minimal weights fighting for the title? Cause no one cares Why no one watches heavyweight in the US? Cause now not only the undisputed champ is European (as he is already for 10 years) but also every contender from 2 to 25 is NOT from the US, maybe except Tony Thompson )). No US-bum even gets the Chance to get destroyed by Klitschko cause he gets destroyed by some second-tier not american like Leapai, Pulev, Fury or Chagaev before it.
This is the purpose of DVRs. If a person is not home, for instance at 5:00 on a Saturday. If there is a show they are interested in seeing, all they need do is set the DVR to record it for later viewing. It takes about 30 sec to do, tops! If a DVR is used, then it will show up as a viewer in the viewer numbers. For instances, perhaps up to 90% of the 486,000 views may have been DVRs. :yep So, time slots are not as inconvenient as in the past. if a customer is interested in an event, they can certainly almost effortlessly view it regardless of time/date conflicts.
