Ali took on the following in title defences...who had lost there last fight yet still got a chance to fight Ali-

    Alfredo Evangelista 209¼ pounds 14-1-1
    Ron Lyle 219 pounds 30-2-1
George Chuvalo 216 pounds 34-11-2 (lost 2 out of his last 3 before facing Ali)

Leon Spinks 197¼ pounds 6-0-1 when he faced Ali-

Been going on for ages in the sport

Depends on promotional contracts and whatnot but K2 could have reached out to Sauerland and offered them favourable terms for Wlad to fight Povetkin. Failing that there's Helenius, Arrerola or even Dimitrenko (yep, he looked awful against Sprott but still better than Mormeck).

I'm a big Wladimir fan, but I'm not going to pretend Mormeck is the best available opponent. I'm not sure apart the promotional side of things and how easy it is to get a sellable fight, but I struggle to believe there wasn't a better option. This is an easy fight for Wladimir that will make K2 big money. That's it, really.

so it took 2 years for him to agree to fight haye and hes fighting jokes like this at a minutes notice. Haye got close and a rematch could be closer.

Yeah, not like Haye pulled out with a 'back injury' - Wlad defeated the WBA 'World' Champion Chagaev in Haye's place, btw - only for Haye to sign on to shortly fight the WBA Paper Champion Valuev.

Totally and utterly Wlad's fault. Poor David.

Haye lost every round if you scored the fight correctly. What logic would there be for having a rematch straight away without Haye even fighting someone inside the top 200?

Funny enough I didn't see anyone here demading Ibragimov have a rematch under these circumstances despite putting up a far better effort than Haye, very strange.

Wlad is no ducker. It isn't his fault the rest of the field is barren.

Chambers and Thompson are fighting each other soon, in an IBF (I think) eliminator, he'll have to rematch the winner of that anyway. Until it's mandated what's the point? Both fights were complete walk overs. Of course, the Mormeck fight will be too, but it's a stay busy fight while something a bit more interesting comes up. He signed and made it easy.

Can a fight that lasts 1 or 2 minutes be classified as a "stay busy" affair? .... If it goes longer than a round then Wlad is carrying Mormeck and thats just wrong when fighting for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Go through history, every champion has had soft defences. Since John L Sullivan the champ has fought easy opponents because this is a business sadly.

Yeah, the winner of Chambers - Thompson should become the IBF mandatory.
