Yes, and being able to have time and range to get punches off does that for you. Wlad's not comfortable when someone's pressuring him a lot, but we've known that for a while. Thompson just confirmed it, I guess.

I really don't rank many heavyweights in the pound for pound rankings. Especially heavyweights of Wlad's size. It's too much guesswork as it is, especially when we are talking about a huge guy who normally has a size advantage over his opponents.

He needs to improve on his comfort level when in close, and making his opponents pay when they miss their shots. He has definitely improved on both over the last 4 years, however he still needs more improvement. In close, he seems to be all over the place at times, and needs to be more relaxed, and solid on his feet. He wastes a lot of energy by being too excited, although that has become better as well. He also still backs up in straight lines once in a while. He needs to stop doing that, especially when his back is near the ropes. It scares the hell out of me. However, as I said before... the biggest one is making his opponents pay after they miss their shots and are out of balance. He does it every once in a while, however... normally he is content to just avoid their punches, and then reset. I guess, I would say that he needs to be a little more fluid in avoiding, and then counterpunching. These types of fights wouldn't last half the distance that they do if he did more of that. Of course... that leads to a possible exchange, and he is a smart fighter that doesn't like to leave his chin open if he doesn't need to.

 

Widdow, you made a great post. I don't read a bunch of nuthuggery in your posts, I think that context is put on by these readers... or the trolls like San Rafael.

Again, nobody ****ing blames Thompson for this fight, like nobody blamed Ibragimov.

Both guys didn't try to win their fights.. and Wlad did what he had to do to win.

It's not like Thompson looked like he tried for more than about 45secs the whole damn fight.. same as Ibragimov.

Thompson just sat there moving with that high guard in a southpaw stance.. of course that makes it ugly at times.

Wlad adjusted, got more comfortable, and broke down Thompson, and got the KO.

The guy who said Thompson quit? Well.. no ****.. he was eating right hands the whole goddamned fight from a pretty heavy puncher.. that'll make most guys quit.

 

Honestly, it's hard not to have him in the top 15.

1. He's had 5 successful defenses of his titles
2. 6 of the last 7 opponents he beat were in the Ring Top-10 (and he stopped 5 of them)
3. He has great overall skills, from offense to defense, though like any other fighter he needs to work on things.

Compare that to guys who round out the top 15 such as DLH, Winky, SSM, Chris John, Paul William, JuanMa Lopez, Montiel, Joan Guzman, Nate Campbell, etc... and Wlad stacks up very well against them.


His resume is equal if not better (as we are talking last 10 fights or so) to those.

Luckily... from past experience I already know that you are pretty weak in the "boxing knowledge" department.

 

As a Klitschko fan I found myself frustrated that Wlad was'nt pressing Tony to the ropes more because when he did he seem to let his hands go more often and Tony was content with just shelling up and not doing nothing.

 

Hell, I have forgotten more about boxing than YOU will ever know.

Seriously, you could not have been impressed with that. He went 10 rounds with a little known sparing partner and got busted up in the face while doing it. If Thompson had had any power Wladimir would have been in trouble.
