This is a stupid question. HW division is in no-mans land and Hopkins - old or not old - has just fought P4P#3 Winky, Antonio Tarver before that and he's a top2-4 p4p today while Wlad MIGHT join the p4p20 if he unifies at least 2 titles. Who's the better fighter? Wlad would easily lose to to Lennox or his bro' Vitali... and even Lennox wasn't beating top3 P4P-ers. Why? There wasn't any at HW, that's why. Wlad is very good but you can't compare him to the top20 p4p unless he proves how good he is against elite opposition. Unfortunately the elite opposition is HW is nowhere to the A+ level of the MW, SMW, LHW division so that's why he has to beat some champs to prove what we already know: he's a hell of a fighter. But we know that about Gamboa and Linares and they aren't on our p4p lists as they need to win huge fights.
Hopkins is still clearly more skilled. Wlad relies on his arm length and size to bully, where as Hopkins can out-box some of the best boxers in the game. Also, wlad has recently taken to holding quite a bit.
I am not sure what you mean by a better fighter. Are you talking in terms of skill, entertainment, competition, etc.? You said Vlad is benefiting from a depleted division, it is debatble. Well, BH is in LHW division that is much worse than the HW, at least in my view. I actualy think LHW division is the worst one, today. While BH possesses great skill, he is an extremely dirty and extremely boring fighter with advanced age. I would like to remind everybody that he had 1 Ko victory in the past 5 years over a blown up DLH.
better in terms of better. i don't see the confusion in a question that asks if one boxer is better than another the same way if i asked if Lebron James was a better basketball player than Kobe Bryant or if Tiger Woods was a better golfer than Phil Mickelson or if Randy Moss was a better receiver than TO
Your examples of basketball and golf are irrelevant as those two sports don't have various weight classes and all those players play against each other. Hypothetically speaking, if BH went to HW division to fight Klitschko, he would have been seriously injured. So, it is still not clear to me. I would say however that BH is of course the much better defensive fighter, with a better chin (again in relation to their respective weight classes), that is a no brainer. However, as far as offense and entertainment value concerned he has quite a gap to fill to match Klitschko.
I would not be surpirsed seeing some people on this board claiming that BH could outbox WK, had he moved to HW.
If it were'nt for the size diffrence, I think hopkins would easily outbox him to a UD. But as is, Wlad will just hold his arm out to keep hopkins away and set up him right, and whenever Hopkins did get an effective counter-combo going, WK would just grab. Pretty much like he fights everyone else.
