Mercer beat a washed up former champion and also got his ass clowned (both in stand-up and on the ground) by a shitty street brawler named Kimbo Slice in like 72 seconds. When Toney fought Couture many boxing fans were telling me that the format of MMA wouldn't even matter because the fights always start standing up. That the prowess, technique and exceptional technical skill of a boxer would be such that any MMA fighter would be immediately knocked out with an uppercut if they even attempted a take-down. It was a no win situation I was supposed to believe. Not so much. Boxing isn't MMA. The striking isn't the same because the range and posturing isn't the same when you also have to consider kicks and take-down defense. When boxers critique the striking styles of MMA fighters and compare it to boxing they are only demonstrating their ignorance of multifaceted combat sports. You can get away with being a "robot" (as some have described it) in boxing and still become HW champion. A robot in MMA gets taken down and choked out. You can call it gay if you want. But you'll be the one unconcious afterward with your eyeballs pointing upwards if you don't take it seriously. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DahOLe5z3Ek[/ame]
Why are you lecturing me? **** you. I was responding to a post. HENDO claimed he could name "boxers" that defeated mma fighters in mma matches. James23 told him to name some. I commented that I could only name one. Mercer did defeat Sylvia. Sylvia is a former MMA champion. Why does that bother you?
Quit being so ****ing sensitive. I wasn't lecturing you. I was expounding upon what you had said. The implication was that boxers are superior to MMA fighters based solely upon the result of the Sylvia/Mercer fight. No one ever mentions Mercer being dismantled by Kimbo though.
Exactly, but misinformed people still like to pretend as if the broken down and tattered Sylvia who we saw fight against Mercer is somehow the bellwether of MMA talent. Please. Everyone was knocking him out at the time including other MMA fighters. It proves nothing other than Sylvia became a rattled can.
You write an article on me naming one boxer to beat a former mma champion, and you call me sensitive? Read what I said. HENDO implied boxers were superior. I just stated that I could only think of one time that a boxer was successful against a seasoned mma fighter.
Actually, I was calling him a liar. He said he could name "boxers", plural, when, in fact, there has only been one. To be factually correct he'd have to say that he can name a boxer that has beaten a former MMA Champion in MMA competition.
You're still not getting it. I didn't write an article "on you". I was simply elaborating on what you had said. That doesn't mean disagreeing, criticizing or lecturing you. You falsely assumed that I was criticizing you. My comments were intended to be impersonal. When I said, "You" I was talking in general about anyone who might be reading this exchange. Not you personally. The only reason that I even quoted you was because you had mentioned Mercer. I simply added some perspective. So what is the problem? I know exactly what Hendo said.
And then he went on to claim that no MMA fighter has ever been successful in boxing. This is another popular misconception that gets peddled often. The transition isn't the same. It's not an equal comparison. I've explained this before. A boxer fighting in an MMA fight does NOT have to sacrificie his main skill set. He is still allowed box. An MMA fighter however crossing over in to boxing would be forced to concede his main areas of expertise (wrestling, submissions, kicks, take downs etc.). It would be like me claiming that all boxers are physically inferior athletes because they could never beat Randy Couture in a wrestling match.
these arguments are so ****ing dumb. seriously, the only guy outside of boxing that would ever do more than get obliterated by wlad/vitali is badr hari. even he would probably just get knocked out like the rest, even after a year with freddie roach.
You're talking to someone who has made roughly analogus arguments for years. Literally years. I understand this. You understand this. They have the logical skills of Paris Hilton.
changing the subject to something that isnt ****ing ******ed, i heard somewhere that a lot of oldschool boxers used to crosstrain wrestling. anything to this?
