First, let me state that I’m not a big fan of Wladimir, but I don’t have anything against him either. Objectively seen, he’s the best HW out there right now, together with his brother maybe. Like it or not. There’s no doubt he’s the champ - but in a weak HW era. But Wlad has been fighting only twice a year during the last 5 years, and against mediocre opposition. Plus these fights weren’t exactly exciting (except for his KO loss to Brewster I, ironically). And it’s not even all Wlads fault, fact is there aren’t any really good opponents in the division, and the few who are decent are often not available, due to politics, injuries, corrupt promoters (Don King, Sauerland), nonsense mandatory defenses, etc… In retrospect, Wlads resume during the last 5 years is pretty meagre, even his fans have to agree on that (and they should be the most disappointed with this). And before you attack me for this statement: I know Brewster, Brock, Ibragimov, Thompson, Byrd are/were decent, but none of them is anything special, they’d hardly been top10 in the 90s. As I said, this situation is not even Wlads fault for the major part. What I mean is that since Wlad can’t face any great contenders - because there simply aren’t any - he can as well totally clean out the division and dominate everyone (if he’s indeed as good as some here claim). Wlad is likely gonna face Haye in June and Povetkin at the end of this year, these two are probably the hottest contenders in the division at this point, but again they’re not really great fighters. Looks like another meagre year. Why not have a fight in between then? Shannon Briggs opened his mouth lately – I know that after a loss and two years of inactivity he doesn’t exactly deserve a shot at the title at all, but **** it, he’s a former beltholder/contender and he’s got a name, Wlad should put him away for good. He’s not much worse than Hasim Rahman anyway, who quit on his stool like a ***** against Toney prior to receiving his shot at Wlad. Wlad should fight 4 times every year from now on until he retires, and he should fight everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY with some kind of name, regardless if they’re deserving of a shot or not. Chambers, Dimitrenko, Chagaev, Valuev, Arreola, ATG Toney, a rematch with fat Peter, a grudge match with a healthy Brewster, Ruiz, Briggs, Gomez, even old Maskaev – he should be able to get six of them into the ring during the next two years, besides Haye and Povetkin. And other fighters will probably be ready in a year or two, like Solis or Rogan. It’s not like Wlad got badly hurt in his last fights, plus he stays in shape all the time – he should be able to fight every three months. Maybe I’m a bit naive about it all, I know HBO and RTL have to be willing to show these fights, plus I know Wlads own brother Vitali is standing in his way, but it’s not impossible. Other champs have done it before. And Wlad does have his say with K2 promotions, that should make things easier. If we suppose that Wlad retires in 2013, he could possibly have a record of 70-3, of course there won’t be any Joe Frazier or prime Holyfield level opponents on it (because there are none around these days) – he probably wouldn’t have beaten them anyways - but it’d still be pretty good. It’s his only possibility to become a champ that will be remembered in 20 years from now, like Lennox Lewis will be. And I think that’s what Wlad wants to achieve after all. If he continues like he does now he won’t be remembered for long. Your thoughts?
i agree he should fight more. i think all the champs should fight more and i agree that he has fought decent opposition, but not excellent opposition. just be prepared to catch some **** about your assesment of the hw division (which i don't disagree with) :yep
I agree with Frost on this. Wlad was so far unable to provide us fans with competitive entertaining match ups during his career. Whether this is due to a lack of quality opponents or just a consequence of his talent matters little here. IMO, he should at least try to fight 4 times a year to keep the fans interested...
I'm pretty sure he wanted to fight 3 times this year which is an increase if nothing else. But the whole thing with Haye caused him to lose a couple months which will probably force him back to 2. I like the idea of him fighting everybody. The downside is then people can chant "bum of the month", but at least no one would be able to accuse him of ducking anymore.
I don't give a nun's nipple what they make if they're fighting 4 times a year, with at least 2 of them against high-quality opponents.
I'm sure he wants to, but there really hasn't been anyone of quality to fight. He also had to make this fight in June because that's when Haye wanted it, Wlad was open to fighting much earlier. Hopefully he can still get both Povetkin and Arreola this year.
